Using the collections in teaching
Using original material, digitised collections or digital content can enhance learning experiences for your students.
Interacting with these materials can help students understand the context of the objects and remember the ideas you discuss around them. It also helps students to develop research and analytical skills, and encourages creative thinking.
To discuss what is possible, email unicolls@st-andrews.ac.uk.
In-person teaching
An in-person class using collections can accommodate a maximum of 15 students. In-person classes are in the New Park Seminar Room in the Richardson Research Library in Martyrs Kirk.
In-person classes delivered by University Collections and Museums staff, which do not need original collections material, can be scheduled in your usual class teaching space.
Deadlines for teaching input or support requests
Email unicolls@st-andrews.ac.uk by the following deadlines to make a request or discuss your teaching needs:
- Semester 1 teaching: Week 15 of Semester 2
- Semester 2 teaching: Week 6 of Semester 1
Making a request by the deadlines does not guarantee teaching input or support can be provided.
Teaching with digitised collections
You can search the digitised collections to find materials to:
- enable larger class sizes to access collections
- take advantage of zoom functions that allow students to look more closely at material
- offer more stimulating options for remote learning
- help students to develop new skills
- promote creative thinking
- allow students to work on different communication styles
- offer alternatives for assessment that support broader learning styles
- expand students’ skills and experience, preparing them for the workplace.
Exhibit
Lecturers and their students can create engaging and interactive narrative presentations with 2D and 3D digitised collections using the online Exhibit tool.
Digitisation service
You can also use the digitisation service to request a digital reproduction of collection items not currently available online.
