Research profile

Research Interests

  • Greek literature and culture of the Roman Empire
  • Greek and Latin novels
  • Early Christian narrative literature and dialogue
  • Ancient athletics
  • The literature and culture of the symposium
  • Ancient miscellanistic and encyclopedic writing.

One of the overarching goals of my work has been to broaden our understanding of the Greek literature and culture of the Roman empire. My work on ancient athletic culture sets literary texts against the background of ancient festivals and gymnasium education. My 2012 monograph Saints and Symposiasts brings Greco-Roman and early Christian literature of the Roman Empire into dialogue. A related series of publications aims to take a fresh look at ancient scientific, encyclopaedic and miscellanistic writing. I have recently finished directing a Leverhulme-funded project in St Andrews (together with Greg Woolf) on 'Science and Empire in the Roman World'. The last of the three edited volumes from that project, entitled Authority and Expertise in Ancient Scientific Culture, was published in early 2017 by CUP.

Current Research

My main current project is a book on mountains in ancient literature and culture. There has been an enormous expansion of interest in mountains in modern European literature and culture in recent decades, but classical landscape tends to get only a very cursory role in that work. My aim is to shed new light on the sophistication of ancient engagement with mountains in both literature and lived experience, and to bring the ancient evidence more into dialogue with scholarship on postclassical representations of mountain landscape. The project is supported by a Leverhulme Trust Research Project Grant entitled 'Mountains in ancient literature and culture and their postclassical reception’, due to start in July 2017.

Research students

  • I have supervised postgraduate research on a wide range of topics in the Greek and Latin literature of the Roman Empire, for example on miscellanistic, geographical, epistolary and novelistic writing.
  • I am currently supervising PhDs on Achilles Tatius, on late antique geographical writing, on wounding in ancient athletic art and literature, and on ancient athletics and elite identity; also (as second supervisor) on depictions of marginal landscapes in Greek tragedy.
  • I am happy to supervise in any of the areas listed above under ‘research interests’, and in many other areas in ancient literature and cultural history. Please feel free to get in touch to discuss possible projects at any time.
  • I am particularly keen to work with postgraduate research students on topics in imperial or late Hellenistic Greek literature within the School’s Centre for the Literatures of the Roman Empire.
