Getting to St Andrews

St Andrews is 50 miles from Edinburgh, 47 miles from Edinburgh airport, and 5.5 miles from the nearest railhead at Leuchars.

Travelling from Edinburgh

  1. By bus. Stagecoach service X59 runs from Edinburgh bus station to St Andrews bus station. Journey time is 1 hour 50 minutes. For timetable go to Stagecoach search page, and download the X59 timetable.
  2. By train. The rail journey from Edinburgh Waverley to Leuchars takes about an hour. Download timetable from Scotrail. Then see travel from Leuchars below.
  3. By taxi. Prebooked from £90 single, not prebooked costs more.

Travelling from Edinburgh Airport

  1. By bus. Route 747 takes you from the airport to Ferrytoll. 2 per hour, journey time 30 minutes. Stagecoach service X59 runs from Ferrytoll to St Andrews bus station. Journey time is 1 hour 20 minutes. For timetable go to Stagecoach search page, and download the X59 timetable.
  2. By bus and train. You have a choice:
    Bus route 100 from airport to Haymarket station. Journey time 20 minutes. £3.50 single, £6.00 open return. Then train to Leuchars. Download timetable from Scotrail. Then see travel from Leuchars below.

    Route 747 bus to Inverkeithing station. Journey time 25 minutes. £5.10 single, £9.20 open return. Then train to Leuchars. Download timetable from Scotrail. Then see travel from Leuchars below.

  3. By taxi. Prebooked from £70 one way. £100+ if not prebooked.

Travelling from Leuchars

  1. By bus. Route 99 and all its variants take you to St Andrews bus station (and other parts of the town). Frequency every 10 minutes during the day, every 30 minutes in the evening. Journey time 15 minutes. Single ticket under £3.
  2. By taxi. No need to prebook; there are always taxis to meet trains from the south. £13+ one way.
