Pastoral Care

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: due to the present circumstances, the Chaplaincy building, also known as Mansefield, is now closed for meetings, gatherings of student societies and all one-to-one appointments until further notice. 

The Chaplaincy is continuing to offer pastoral care for students and staff - contact the Chaplain Donald MacEwan on or Assistant Chaplain Samantha Ferguson on to arrange meetings by phone. 

Donald, the Chaplain, will be taking a period of eight weeks leave from Saturday 20 June until 16 August 2020.  This is a long-planned period using annual leave, following nine years as Chaplain.  He hopes to spend the time resting and reading, to help prepare for uncertain times in the University and society. 

While Donald is off duty, the Chaplaincy remains available to support students and staff throughout the summer vacation.  People can talk in confidence to Chaplains from across the Chaplaincy team via Teams, facetime and phone calls, or by email – whatever the issue.  All are welcome to email the Chaplaincy at or call 01334 462866.  The Assistant Chaplain, Revd Samantha Ferguson, will be taking the lead in the Chaplaincy supporting colleagues and students.  Her email address is  Students are also welcome to contact Student Services at

If you are in St Andrews, you may well meet Donald on a regular walk.  He looks forward to returning to work, renewed and refreshed, in mid-August. 

The Chaplain, Revd Dr Donald MacEwan, and Assistant Chaplain, Revd Samantha Ferguson, are available to offer pastoral care for any student or member of staff, regardless of faith or philosophy of life. This could be sympathetic, confidential listening ear, support in emotional issues, a safe place to explore questions of faith, someone to talk to in a crisis, about a personal relationship or family worries, bereavement, or support when all else fails. 

The chaplains also offers confidential support to people on questions of sexuality. Online resources for Christians and others over issues in sexuality can be found at Affirmation Scotland. Muslim students with questions relating to their sexuality are welcome to approach the Honorary Islamic Chaplain to the University, Imam Abdul Rauf ( The following website also offers support:
