Employment details
Organisation: British School at Athens
Job title: Library Research Assistant
Occupational Sector: Librarian/Information Management
What has been your route to getting your current position?
I went on to do an MSc after my MA and got this job straight after that through maintaining a good communication network with past supervisors, being interested in and aware of any and all possible opportunities and showing the initiative in reaching out to organisations and enquiring after employment or internship prospects.
What does your job involve ?
Working in a specialist subject library and cataloguing all the new books that come in. I work part-time which facilitates my own research, for which both the library and the wider academic community are essential.
What are the best bits of your job ?
Being a part of an academic community and familiarising myself with all the new publications in my field of interest.
Why were you successful?
I was able to show that I was hard-working and reliable. Through being personable and industrious I maintained good communication networks and received good references.
What skills/ knowledge from your degree have you found particularly helpful in this role?
Subject specific knowledge regarding archaeology, classics and Greek and Roman antiquity are vital for cataloguing new books.
What advice would you give to students wishing to follow the same path?
Although it is a temporary job, I would highly recommend it to those either wishing to gain further experience for employment or those wishing to pursue further study at a later date and an academic career. The library work is often relevant to my own research and it is always interesting. The hours I work facilitate research time and my position gives me access to a world class library. I have the opportunity to live abroad in an exciting, intellectually stimulating, social community.
