Interview coaching

The Careers Centre offers appointments to help coach you for interviews you have been invited to.

No matter what stage you’re at, the Careers Centre’s professionally trained careers advisers can support you. Appointments are designed to be collaborative, and careers advisers will work with you to meet your goals.

What to expect

Appointments last 45 minutes. During your appointment, the careers adviser can provide:

  • a full interview simulation, where the careers adviser comes prepared with questions to ask you, then provides feedback on your answers
  • general interview strategy, including tips and advice, ways to deal with nerves, and how to research an employer before an interview.

The adviser will give you feedback on your answers either at the end of the interview or after each question, along with tips to develop your technique.

A careers adviser can help you prepare for various kinds of interviews, such as competency-based, strength-based, video, or telephone interviews.

Advisers cannot provide feedback on detailed technical or subject-specific questions. Additionally, while careers advisers will do their best to simulate an interview, they will not be able to predict the exact questions or interview format you will experience.

How to prepare

To make the most of your interview coaching appointment, you should read the Careers Centre’s resources on interview skills and assessment centres. These include how to prepare for an interview and what to expect on the day.

You should also think about whether you want a full interview simulation or general interview strategy help.

If you are looking for a full interview simulation, think about the types of questions the careers adviser may ask you. For example, for competency-based questions, you should prepare answers using the STAR technique. The careers adviser will guide you and give constructive feedback on your answers.
