This LinkedIn feature lets you explore the career paths of 30,000+ St Andrews Alumni.

Using LinkedIn University Pages – this video shows you how simple it is to browse St Andrews alumni - a great way to find St Andrews alumni in your area, what alumni who studied your subject are doing now and also to connect with these alumni.

What is LinkedIn?

LinkedIn‌ is a business-related social networking site, similar to facebook but for professional networking rather than social.   It is the world’s largest professional network with over 120 million members and growing rapidly.

How do I get started?

1. Create a profile – needs to have 4 key elements

  • Professional photograph
  • Headline  - year, subject and career goal
  • Education – University of St Andrews is a must
  • Searchable – add keywords associated with your career choice

2. Build  your network

  • Family, friends, family of friends(if in careers of interest to you)
  • Alumni – same subject, careers of interest
  • Recruiters – especially if you have made personally at  recruitment events
  • Careers Adviser  

3. Join Groups

  • Professional groups related to your career interest – it is important to engage in discussions
  • Recruitment Groups e.g. Accenture Management Consultancy Careers
  •  Alumni

4. Research Companies- search within LinkedIn “Companies” tab

  • Company – click on “Check out insightful statistics” – great  background for applications
  • Updates – click on “Follow Company” to keep updated with what’s happening

5. Next step ...

By joining this site you can make contact with professionals in all different sectors, connect to recruiters and keep in touch with alumni. You can also research individuals – very handy to use before an interview – find out about your interview panel. Linkedin is also used by some companies to headhunt and advertise positions and it allows you to market yourself.

LinkedIn has two groups which allow you to network with alumni. These are the University of St Andrews Alumni and a subgroup, University of St Andrews  Alumni – Mentorship Programme. This subgroup has members who are particularly keen to help current students with their careers.  These groups can only be accessed by joining LinkedIn.

  • Using LinkedIn University Pages – this video shows you how simple it is to browse St Andrews alumni - a great way to find out what St Andrews alumni are in your area, or who are doing what you want to do and see where they work. You will also be able to connect with these alumni. 


These videos will show you additional features of Linkedin and how you can use it for further career search. (These videos are geared towards US graduates but most of the content is applicable to the UK)
