Organisation: The Dow Chemical Company
Job title: Lead Account Representative
Occupational Sector: Marketing
What has been your route to getting your current position?
After graduating, I worked for a start up company in London that gave me sales experience. That experience gave me the background I needed to get accepted into Dow's Commercial program. I trained in US in a few different locations before joining Dow's Water & Process Solutions business based in London.
What does your job involve ?
My job involves 60/40 split between marketing and account management. I spend my time working with end user engagement (marketing) strategies and campaigns as well as managing power and refinery accounts for my business in UK and Ireland.
What are the best bits of your job ?
Visiting customers at unique locations - ex: Nuclear Power Stations. Building customer relationships and campaigns to increase and defend market share.
Why were you successful?
Work experience and the module choices I took at university definitely helped in my progression. Particular the societies I was a part of helped differentiate me from others applying to the same roles.
What skills/ knowledge from your degree have you found particularly helpful in this role?
Entrepreneurial module and marketing modules I took are especially useful in providing the right mindset and tools that I use daily.
What advice would you give to students wishing to follow the same path?
If you enjoy marketing and looking for a similar role. Whether it is SME's or Large corporations I highly recommend getting a job in sales (only need a few years). It will provide you with skills and tools that you can call upon throughout your career. Also, do not be afraid to try lots of different roles. For me, working for a large organization like Dow you have plenty of opportunities to try different roles and work in various locations. They also provide a clear career path and will help you achieve your goals. Be open to try different things and do not discount roles or an industry because you have a management degree. The degree gives you more possibilities than any other.
