Employment details
Organisation: Craneware
Job title: Senior Business Intelligence Analyst
Occupational Sector: IT/Computer Programming
What has been your route to getting your current position?
I started in the tech support department at Craneware doing application support. This turned out to be a great way to get into the company and get a footing in the IT industry due to all the opportunities and support given to learn new skills. From there I applied for a role in the BI team and was subsequently promoted to Senior BI Analyst.
What does your job involve ?
My role is quite varied and touches on all aspects of the company. We produce all the internal reporting for the different departments as well as building and maintaining data warehouses to allow for more complex reporting and trending over time. We also analyse some huge industry datasets to identify trends and patterns that can help to ensure the company is positioning itself in the right place at the right time.
What are the best bits of your job ?
Due to how involved we are with all aspects of the business I get to see the impacts of my work all over the company and really feel like I am making a difference as opposed to just being a little cog in a huge machine.
Why were you successful?
Starting in an entry level tech support role at the company really helped me to get to know the company and client base. Without that I doubt I would have gotten the opportunity to move up to the BI Team and I certainly wouldn't have progressed as quickly as I did without that solid grounding it gave me.
What skills/ knowledge from your degree have you found particularly helpful in this role?
The analytical thinking I learnt from my degree was a big help initially while solving problems in the tech support role and later when solving larger analytical problems in the BI Team.
What advice would you give to students wishing to follow the same path?
Picking the right company is as important as picking the right career path. Finding somewhere with a good culture fit can make all the difference. I worked in a few different companies before coming to Craneware and really noticed the difference. When you find a company with a good culture fit the social life at work just happens automatically because you can’t help but make friends with likeminded people.
