Organisation: Edsell Limited
Job title: Operations Manager
Occupational Sector: Business Management
What has been your route to getting your current position?
After graduating I spent a brief time working in customer service and sales for an events company. I then moved on to working in Esate Agency as a negotiator for 9 months. Then was offered a chance to work for a start up tech company overseeing all the projects.
What does your job involve ?
Managing a team of developers and designers to produce apps. Dealing with all accounts and payments for the company. Reporting back to owner of the company and developing business strategy.
What are the best bits of your job ?
Working with many different individuals from a wide range of companies.
Why were you successful?
My time as event director for the DONT WALK charity fashion show truly helped me stand out in terms of project management,
What skills/ knowledge from your degree have you found particularly helpful in this role?
Presentations skills and in depth analysis skills really help when communication with a wide range of people and enabling me to step back and see the whole picture to force problems.
What advice would you give to students wishing to follow the same path?
App development is an interesting industry, it takes a while to understand exactly what developers are talking bout and the best way to deal with them. They almost have their own language! As the overall project manager for the company, my hours are varied and I spend quite a lot of time waiting for people to get back to me with completed tasks. Because all of our team work remotely the social side of things is not so great. However I am very fortunate that I love close to a lot of my fellow St Andrews's graduates and friends.
