Employment details
Organisation: Charityworks
Job title: Graduate Trainee
Occupational Sector: Not for profit
What has been your route to getting your current position?
A friend suggested I apply for this graduate scheme. I filled out the application form, attended both interview days and was offered the job
What does your job involve ?
Each graduate trainee is placed with a non-profit organisation so the role varies massively. Many of the placements, including my own, comprise of rotations around different departments in the organisation. The graduate scheme also involves substantial personal development opportunities: bimonthly training days, mentorship schemes and research assignments.
What are the best bits of your job ?
Learning lots of specific useful skills necessary to perform my job: Social Media, Marketing Research, account management etc. A wide range of soft skills developed through the official graduate scheme training days: people management, project management, communication etc.
Why were you successful?
I demonstrated a "passion" to work in the non-profit sector through extensive experience volunteering. I was able to relate the various competencies to extra-curriculars and work experience. I was also willing to accept a role in a non-profit organisation not directly relevant to my long term plans.
What skills/ knowledge from your degree have you found particularly helpful in this role?
Concise explanation necessary for philosophy is pretty relevant to marketing
What advice would you give to students wishing to follow the same path?
Demonstrate your desire to work in non-profits. Volunteer lots and volunteer broadly to develop an range of skills. The hours are 9-5 Monday to Friday. Socially, the scheme is great. There are about 30 other recent graduates doing Charityworks scheme locally. We meet up regularly independent of the training days.
