Employment details
Organisation: Jaguar Land Rover
Job title: Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Battery Technical Specialist
Occupational Sector: Technical Specialist
What has been your route to getting your current position?
I started at Jaguar Land Rover(JLR) after finishing my PhD at St Andrews. Initially I worked as a project engineer, I gradually took on more responsibility as my role evolved into a Technical Specialist
What does your job involve ?
I'm responsible for developing aspects of strategy regarding hybrid batteries within JLR. In conjunction with this, I lead research projects that support this strategy as well as technical support for current vehicle programs
What are the best bits of your job ?
Contributing(in a small part) to the future direction of JLR, working within the rapidly evolving vehicle research environment
Why were you successful?
My PhD put me in a fairly unique position regarding the background required for my current position but almost as important was the willingness to adapt what I had learnt in the lab to an engineering environment.
What skills/ knowledge from your degree have you found particularly helpful in this role?
Through my degree I developed an in-depth technical knowledge of the area I currently work in, but other aspects of my PhD, such as presenting my research to peers and at conferences allowed me to learn the value of communicating technical information to a wide audience
What advice would you give to students wishing to follow the same path?
Some of the most interesting opportunities your degree offers wont necessarily be along its traditional career paths
