Job title: Account Executive
Occupational Sector: Advertising
What has been your route to getting your current position?
Work experience followed by the Grey grad scheme
What does your job involve ?
I am the account exec on Lucozade, McVities and SCOPE. My role is very varied and never the same each day but generally I (alongside my team): Manage client and Partner Agency relationships. Assist creative and strategic development of campaigns. Manage production process, timings and budgets with producers for TV adverts, OOH and Print executions. Assist in the more general account admin - someone has to organise meetings, finance, cabs and food.
What are the best bits of your job ?
Film and photo shoots. The agency life. Meeting and working with influential and renowned ambassadors (including the England Rugby Team).
Why were you successful?
I just worked really hard to impress in my 4 week work experience placement and didn't fluff a very quick yet important 'lift interview'. I then managed to get myself a spot on the grad scheme and secure some formal training - this was more traditional - they liked my application for its honesty, had a 'memorable' interview (almost choking on a pen) and worked well leading a team in the day long session involving the dreaded group presentation.
What skills/ knowledge from your degree have you found particularly helpful in this role?
Quick and detailed information analysis, absorption and recall. The ability to craft succinct and precise presentations and a confidence in presenting.
What advice would you give to students wishing to follow the same path?
Get as much work experience as you can - show people first hand that you are good at the job and learn the most you can about how each agency you are at works. Show you care about the industry - do your research, watch ads and get passionate about them. Apply for everything that interests you. Yes, doing grad scheme applications whilst also revising for exams isn't fun but they really help you to work out if you want it enough. If you find applying fun it's probably a good sign.
