Job title: | Senior Manager |
Occupational Sector: | Management Consulting |
What has been your route to getting your current position? |
After a postgraduate MSc in Applied Computing from Dundee university, I joined Accenture on their graduate training scheme, and have stayed for 9 years so far. This has included three promotions through the Consulting career model, starting at Analyst > Consultant > Manager > Senior Manager. |
What does your job involve ? |
I manage delivery teams building and maintaining websites and eCommerce platforms for large multi-national clients. My teams are spread around the globe and I am responsible for multi-million dollar budgets and projects. I am also actively involved in recruitment for Accenture, as well as being an active member of the Employee Consultative Forum, supporting senior leadership in strategic decision-making processes. |
What are the best bits of your job ? |
Accenture is all about the people - I am surrounded by hugely intelligent and capable people who challenge and support me every day, and who allow me to deliver very high quality work for our clients. I also love how ethical I believe Accenture to be - the firm actively pursues best-practice in supporting its people, inclusivity and diversity. |
Why were you successful? |
I believe my combination of Arts and Science degrees helped my application, but primarily an interest in technology and the willingness to work hard were the key things to demonstrate. |
What skills/ knowledge from your degree have you found particularly helpful in this role? |
Communication skills, time management, delivery of high quality work in short timeframes, delivery to deadlines. |
What advice would you give to students wishing to follow the same path? |
Accenture demands quite a lot from you in terms of time commitment - we do whatever it takes to get the job done on time and to high levels of quality - so you do need to understand that this isn't a 9-5 job. Having said that, I have made amazing lifelong friends with my colleagues and only work that hard because the company motivates me to do so, with interesting and challenging work. |
