Job title: Quality Assurance Engineer / Technical Business Analyst
Occupational Sector: IT/Computer Programming
What has been your route to getting your current position?
Being a St Andrews postgraduate alumni helped me a lot to find a job role in a well known company, 2 months after my graduation. St Andrews' reputation together with the quality of the studies provided, increases the possibilities for graduates to find the desirable job role as the knowledge gained together with the leadership skills that the graduates develop during their studies make them competitive against other graduates. University facilities, as well as the guidance by the lecturers/professors help students to develop their knowledge and decide what role is appropriate for them. The assistance provided by my supervisor Dr Gordon Baxter and by my lecturer Dr Lisa Dow was very useful for me to find my current job role and also the Career Centre  helped me to create a very good CV/Motivation letter.
What does your job involve ?
Being a Sky employee for 14 months I have been trained in Software Engineering and Quality Assurance Engineering. At the beginning of my career at Sky I was involved in the development process of Sky mobile applications in Apple and Android department (Sky Go, Sky News, Sky Formula 1 etc.). At the same time I was involved in Quality Assurance engineering, which involved the planning of the testing process. High programming skills as well analytical skills were required for these two roles but the guidance provided within the Sky Academy gives graduates the skills and confidence for these roles. At Sky "We believe in better" and every effort DOES count, thus, after 14 months of hard work I was given 2 promotions, and now I am starting my new role as Technical Business Analyst.
What are the best bits of your job ?
1) Sky is a great place to work. Friendly people, state of the art technology, flexibility and many other benefits that keep employees happy and motivated.
2) Promotions and bonuses depending on the individual effort of the employees.
3) High level of responsibility and decision making that always leads to innovations.
4) Certificates and diplomas paid by Sky.
5) Team game within an Agile environment.
Why were you successful?
Being a St Andrews graduate played a crucial role for finding this job role. Also my previous work experience helped me to have an advantage against other candidates but again, the confidence that I gained during my studies in St Andrews gave me the opportunity to get a role within a big organization and helped me to overcome my stress during the interviews and the assessment centre.
What skills/ knowledge from your degree have you found particularly helpful in this role?
  • Development (coding).
  • Database Management Systems.
  • Project Management.
  • Working under pressure.
  • Meet strict deadlines.
What advice would you give to students wishing to follow the same path?
I would advise graduates to follow their dreams. Identify their strengths and make certain steps to achieve their goals. Also, be close with their supervisors/lecturers and be advised by them when they meet a problem during their studies. Team game (collaboration with other students) and the guidance provided by their supervisors/lecturers will make them identify their weaknesses and overcome them converting them to strengths.
