What has been your route to getting your current position?
After graduating in June 2015 I decided to take half a year off to work/travel. At the start of 2016 I started applying for multiple graduate positions through several routes e.g. LinkedIn, Glassdoor, recruitment events, the St Andrews Careers Centre. With this, I unfortunately learned the hard way that job application processes can be very inefficient, take a long time and are riddled with computerised rejections. In this area my advice is to be persistent and do not lose focus. You may not pass the first few interviews you have, but it comes with benefits such as enhanced experience for your next interview for that even better position. After five months of searching I received six offers all in the space of two weeks with firms such as Tesla and Infosys – “jobs are like buses, they all come at once”. The route itself for Capgemini involved the initial application, screening test, phone interview and finally an Assessment Centre. My advice for the Assessment Centre is to think out of the box, be approachable, show enthusiasm to learn about consultancy/tech and ask questions.
What does your job involve ?
On my current project I am known as an ‘Operational Delivery Manager’. This essentially means that I am the bridge between the client and Capgemini when it comes to resolving and actively preventing operational issues through actively communicating with my network of colleagues both Onshore and Offshore. The role has really thrown myself into the deep-end, especially having come from a chemistry background as a lot of the technology and IT-infrastructural concepts are brand new to me. But this also has its advantages as I am learning every day.
What are the best bits of your job ?
Consultancy is such an interesting and varied industry. Once you start at a consultancy firm the skillsets earned can really put your career on fast-track. One month you could be working on a project in the pharmaceuticals industry, then transition to a project in the financial sector. The diversity of experiences is ideal especially with increasing emergence of automation in the workplace. Furthermore, the work life balance is also fantastic – for example on my project I am allowed to work from home on Monday and Friday, whilst between Tuesday to Thursday I will be working internationally for a client in Dublin on an infrastructural transformation project. All my colleagues are very down-to-earth and socially active in Dublin, so I never feel like I am missing out back home in London. As well as this the graduate community in London is very vibrant and making it fun and easy to build upon your professional network.
Why were you successful?
During the application process – know what consultancy is all about, why it is important, come across as a smart/intelligent/sociable communicator, study consultancy techniques and terms. Finally and most importantly look into emerging technologies and have a ‘passion’ for it. Some graduates can be caught off-guard with how much tech is involved in this industry – so use it to your advantage.
What skills/ knowledge from your degree have you found particularly helpful in this role?
Chemistry involved having good time-management skills with the sheer demand of work, study and practical sessions required. The research, presentation and report writing skills have also come in very useful.
What advice would you give to students wishing to follow the same path?
Overall Capgemini are great to work for. You have so much flexibility to independently build up your own career and I very much recommend them. If you want to learn more, Capgemini are quite active online e.g. Twitter and LinkedIn. I suggest reading informative articles or even Tweeting and asking my colleagues questions to help enhance your understanding and knowledge within the consultancy world.
