Job title: | Staff Geologist |
Occupational Sector: | Geology |
What has been your route to getting your current position? |
After graduating from St. Andrews, I completed 2 weeks work
experience with the BGS in Edinburgh analyzing groundwater data and then
6 months with Stonewall Mining in South Africa working as the Mine
Geologist at a gold mine.
|
What does your job involve ? |
Groundwater and soil sampling, environmental report writing, drilling and subcontractor oversight, data analyses.
|
What are the best bits of your job ? |
Working on projects in the field using new and complex analytical tools and equipment.
|
Why were you successful? |
I had 6 months of previous work experience to back up my degree in Geosciences.
|
What skills/ knowledge from your degree have you found particularly helpful in this role? |
The Environmental Geoscience module was the most applicable to my
current job, but all of the experience gained during field excursions
has greatly helped my efficiency and organization in the field. |
What advice would you give to students wishing to follow the same path? |
This type of Environmental consulting job offers a really nice
balance between office and field work if you’re like me and hate being
stuck in the office all day. They have a very organized corporate
system which is great for training and supervision and there are a lot
of young people in the business.
