About CAPOD tutoring services

  • One-to-one appointments are free and confidential
  • Our primary aim is to help students over occasional bumps—please note, we do not offer routine tutoring service
  • Services are limited to no more than 3 tutoring appointments per term
  • Our tutors are PhD students who have an excellent understanding of mathematics and statistics, and often lead tutorial groups within schools.

Who can be tutored and when?

  • Undergraduates
  • Taught postgraduates (Masters)
  • Tutoring services are not available to PGR (PhD) students
  • Before requesting an appointment with CAPOD, please first work with your school and or the tutors assigned to your modules.
  • New students in particular will be required to attend at least 2 weeks of classes before being considered for a one-to-one appointment with CAPOD.

Getting the most from your appointment

To get the most from your appointment you should:

  • Be as specific as you can about what you would like help with. In the first instance you should make one appointment.  It is more efficient to choose the one or two topics that are the most important.
  • Bring your lecture notes/ textbooks/ tutorial notes along with you.
  • Expect to be treated as an independent learner.
  • For this reason repeat appointments are usually limited at the discretion of the tutor and CAPOD staff.‌
  • Maths/Stats & Study Skills cannot be tutored in the same appointment (different tutors are required. Consider attending a drop-in study skills 1:1 session at the library Thursdays 2-4:45 instead).

 How do I book a one-to-one appointment?

'Friendly econ' scheme

Sub-honours students in Economics should also note 'Friendly Econ', a student-run tutoring scheme organised jointly by CAPOD and the St Andrews Economics Society.

Friendly Econ is a student-run tutoring scheme organised jointly by CAPOD and the St Andrews Economics Society. The tutors are honours students selected based on their academic excellence and strong personal skills. This ensures that the sessions are run in a relaxed and informal atmosphere, where the tutor guides the student towards discovering the solution.

Economics Honours students provide support with:

  • understanding economic concepts;

  • performing mathematical calculations; and,

  • solving tutorial questions.

When, where?

Sessions take place downstairs in the University Library,  on a 'drop in' basis @ 15:30-17:00 every Wednesday during term-time only.
