Dr Natalie Adamson is an invited senior researcher at the seminar ‘Histories of Abstraction: Hans Hartung’ at the Fondation Hartung-Bergman, Antibes, France, 26-28 May 2016. 

This summer Dr Karen Brown will present a suite of research papers based on her research into ‘Museums and Social Sustainability in Scotland and Costa Rica’ funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, including ‘The Predatory Museum’ and ‘A Sense of Place in EU and LAC: the Role of Landscapes for Ecomuseums’ during the International Council of Museums triennial conference in Milan. She will also co-chair a panel on ‘Word and Image in Children’s Literature’ with Dr Laurence Petit and Dr Camille Fort within the European Society for the Study of English Literatures conference in Galway.

Dr Linda Goddard presented a paper entitled ‘Paul Gauguin as Anti-Critic’ at the Association of Art Historians’ annual conference in Edinburgh in April. She will be a Summer Visitor at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, in June and July 2016. A short essay about her research on Gauguin, originally published in the Institute Letter, has been reprinted in the literary journal PN Review (March-April 2016).

Ms Ann Gunn gave a paper, ‘One Hundred and Sixty Copperplates: Andrew Bell’s Illustrations for the first edition (1771) of the Encyclopaedia Britannica’ at the ASECS/ECSSS conference in Pittsburgh, PA, 30 March – 2 April 2016.

Dr Jeremy Howard published two articles: ‘Viewing Askance: Irrationalist Aspects in Russian Art from Fedotov to Malevich and into the Beyond’ in Olga Tabachnikova ed., Facets of Russian Irrationalism between Art and Life. Mystery inside Enigma, Leiden, Brill, 2016, pp. 385-414; and ‘Nursing the ciphers and chimeras of orientalist presence and absence in architecture around 1900’, in Zsombor Jékely ed., Ödön Lechner in Context. Studies of the international conference on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Ödön Lechner’s death, Budapest, Museum of Applied Arts, 2015, pp. 105-118.

In March 2016 Jeremy gave several lectures in Russia: ‘Dzheremi-Yurodivyy: Opyt zapadnogo duraka v sovetskom soyuze 1981-1984gg’ at the Museum of the First Soviet, Ivanovo; and ‘Izobrazhenie Vladimira: Analiz khudozhestennogo prisutstviya (i otsutstviya) Knyazya Vladimira v izobrazitel’nom iskusstve v period mezhdu 1770 i 1916, i v tvorchestve Sergeya Gribkova’, in the Museum of Industry and Art, Ivanovo. On 8 April 2016 Jeremy gave the lecture ‘Soyuz Molodezhi v Iskusstve i Obrazovanii…’ at the European University, St Petersburg.

During March and April 2016 Jeremy conducted research in museums, schools, institutes, streets and studios of Moscow, Ivanovo, Kostroma, Palekh, Lomy and St Petersburg. A report on the first part of the fieldtrip was published in Rabochiy kray, No. 54 (26603), 14 April 2016, p. 2. The official website of Ivanovo Educational Department published a report on his research and teaching in High School No. 32 (‘The Bird School’).

Dr Laura Moretti has published this article: ‘The palazzo, collections, and musical patronage of Niccolo Gaddi (1536-91)’, Journal of the History of Collections, 2016.

Dr Stephanie O’Rourke published an essay, ‘The Singular Multiple’, in the exhibition catalogue for Degas: A Strange New Beauty, which opened at The Museum of Modern Art in mid-March and will be on view through July.  

In March Dr Kathryn M. Rudy gave the keynote address at the 36th Annual Conference of The Center for Medieval Studies, Fordham University, New York City; her talk was titled ‘Dirty Books: Approaches to Measuring Reader Response in the Middle Ages’. While in New York she worked with curatorial and conservation staff at the Morgan Library to study Ms. M.869 (the Arenenberg gospels) under UV light to better understand how the manuscript was used, handled, kissed, and scraped. In April she gave a talk about eating images of the Face of Christ at a conference about the Roman Veronica, held at Madgalene College, Cambridge.  In May she will give a keynote address at the St Andrews student-organised conference Re//Generate: Materiality and the Afterlives of Things in the Middle Ages. Her talk, which is titled ‘Assembled from disparate parts: medieval manuscripts, upcycled and recycled’, draws upon her forthcoming book.

Dr Catherine Spencer’s chapter ‘Entrap, Engulf, Overwhelm: From Existentialism to Counterculture in the Work of Marta Minujín’ was published in the book Sabotage Art: Politics and Iconoclasm in Contemporary Latin America, edited by Sophie Halart and Mara Polgovsky Ezcurra (I. B. Tauris, 2016).
