SUMMARY:Epistemology Seminar: Petronella Randell (St Andrews)  "The dilemma of transformative decision-making" [Hybrid]
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Transformative decisions are almost always framed as a problem for decision theory. However\, it seems that the problem has no real bite when presented in this way – there are many ways it can be avoided\, and most don’t incur significant costs. For example\, the problem only arises on a specific (nonstandard) conception of decision theory\, and even then\, it only then becomes a problem if we accept the requirement that outcomes must be evaluated from the subjective perspective. I think transformative decisions are misconstrued as a problem for decision theory. Paul’s argument is (or should be) that transformative decisions can be made rationally\, but only at the cost of authenticity. The problem of transformative experience is more accurately described as a dilemma between rationality and authenticity. Currently\, the dilemma is under-explored and ill-motivated. I will argue that a conflict between authenticity and rationality in transformative decision-making arises when we take the commitments that transformative decisions involve seriously. \nHybrid talk. SUMMARY:Epistemology Seminar: Roy Sorensen (St Andrews) "TIME TRAVELER CONFIRMS THE FIVE MINUTE HYPOTHESIS!" [Hybrid]
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Many epistemological principles are formulated temporally: a conclusion can be learned from a premise only if the premise is known before the conclusion\, a belief is justified if previously believed\, a belief is self-undermining if it does not leave enough time for it to be rationally formed. But what matters for any norm is personal time\, not time. Personal time is a time-like relation (roughly\, the time measured by your wristwatch) that knits together temporal parts so that they conform to familiar laws of nature. Processes that disrupt developmental sequences (artificially aging\, progeria\, high speed travel) threaten inconsistent narratives. These ostensible contradictions lead non-actual phenomena\, such as time travel\, to be over-judged as impossible. Indeed\, the need to draw a distinction between time and personal time emerged most forcefully for those seeking a consistent reading of this genre of fiction. This literary illumination allows us to discern a less visible need to draw the distinction for all types of value: prudential\, moral\, aesthetic\, and epistemic. \nHybrid talk. Room: School V.

Moreover\, there’s been an increasing amount of work on how\, whether\, and when we should consider modifying the logical bedrock of our methods of inquiry. Usually\, these disagreements are assumed to concern ordinary individual beliefs\, or sets of individual beliefs. Much of the recent discussion in the epistemology of disagreement has concentrated on such cases. However\, our disagreements are often more complex in that they involve states other than individual beliefs. We disagree about whom or what to trust\, about which epistemic norms to accept\, about which basic assumptions about the world (hinges) to accept\, or indeed about what or whom to have faith in. These non-belief disagreements are interesting and important in their own right\, and in many cases they underlie the more ordinary disagreements. The question we want to focus on in this workshop is this: should we conciliate or remain steadfast in disagreements ranging over states other than individual beliefs?
