SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar: Greg Restall\, “Inferentialism for Everyone"
DESCRIPTION:This is the first of three sessions\, on inferentialist semantics. Greg will be in Taiwan delivering the 2025 Wendy Huang Lectures\, and these three sessions in the M&L seminar are his opportunity to give the lectures a preliminary outing. \nI have three aims for this set of lectures. Two are central\, and the third is incidental: \n\nTo give an account of what is so distinctive about logic\, insofar as logical notions have a grip on whatever can be said or thought.\nTo clarify the connections between logic and semantics\, the theory of meaning.\nThe product of these two aims is that I get to provide a philosophical prolegomena and a non-technical introduction to the more technical work I have done in my forthcoming manuscript Proof\, Rules and Meaning.\n\nToday’s topic is the fundamentals of proof\, rules and meaning. I aim to give an opinionated introduction to inferentialist semantics.

SUMMARY:ECT Seminar: Francisca Silva on Grasp of a Subject Matter
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In the literature on subject matters\, it is now often assumed that logical connectives like conjunction and disjunction do not contribute to what we talk about. This is usually informally characterized as their ‘not adding’ any subject matter to the subject matter of sentences in which they’re used. However\, the formal constraints that are imposed correspond to a stronger constraint: that such connectives must not alter in any way the subject matters of the sentences they connect to. In this talk I want to consider the outlook of relaxing this constraint and allowing connectives to restrict but not add any subject matter\, give potential examples of instances where this might happen\, and apply this idea to taking first steps to provide a quantitative notion of grasp of a subject matter with some analogies to that of degrees of belief.
