SUMMARY:Unity Seminar: Pre-Read - Theories of Location 2
DESCRIPTION:Correia\, Fabrice (2022). A General Theory of Location Based on the Notion of Entire Location. Journal of Philosophical Logic 51 (3):555-582. \nAbstract: It would be a good thing to have at our disposal a general theory of location that is neutral with respect to the view that some objects have more than one exact location\, the view that some objects are located without having an exact location\, and the view that some objects are “spanners”—where a spanner is an object exactly located at a region that has proper parts but which has no proper part exactly located at a proper part of the region. As far as I know\, no theory of location that can be found in the literature has this feature. I put forward a new theory that does—or so I argue. The theory takes as its sole locational primitive the notion of being entirely located at. \nhttps://philpapers.org/rec/CORAGT-2

SUMMARY:FPST Seminar: Jade Fletcher (St Andrews) - In-person
DESCRIPTION:Title:  ‘What can(not) social norms do?’ \nAbstract: In this (very) exploratory paper I investigate the relationship between social normativity and other domains of normativity. I suggest that given a metaphysically productive relationship between pernicious social norms and ideological social construction\, pernicious social norms can create ontologically oppressive kinds\, and consequently this can mar some seemingly valuable features of epistemic normativity and prudential normativity. Given this picture\, I argue that this gives feminist metaphysicians reason to embrace more objectivist conceptions of moral normativity.
