SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar Leon Commandeur (University of Bergen)
DESCRIPTION:Title: A tour of logical instrumentalism  \nAbstract: \nLogical instrumentalism\, broadly defined\, is the position that holds that logic should be understood as a tool or instrument\, designed or engineered with a specific purpose in mind\, that allows one to achieve certain goals. In this talk I will consider this position in more detail. I will show various instrumentalist proposals in the literature\, both recent and more historical\, with a focus on some proposals put forth in the debate on anti-exceptionalism about logic\, and I will compare the position with other positions in the philosophy of logic. In doing so\, I aim to get more clear what logical instrumentalism can and cannot be\, and what its challenges and promises are.

SUMMARY:Language and Mind Seminar | Michelle Montague (U.T. Austin) “Pseudo-material shadows cast by grammar”
DESCRIPTION:In section IV of ‘On Referring’ (1950)\, P.F Strawson warns us of the “long philosophical shadows” cast by the subject-predicate distinction. “The distinctions between particular and universal\, between substance and quality\,” he says\, “are such pseudo-material shadows\, cast by the grammar of the conventional sentence in which separable expressions play distinguishable roles.” Although Strawson later offered some qualifications on this claim\, I will show how\, in his book Individuals (1959)\, he adheres to its basic spirit. There he holds that just as the fundamental form of thought is not the subject-predicate form\, so too the fundamental form of reality is not the particular-universal form.

SUMMARY:Feminist Philosophy and Social Theory Seminar: Elaina Gauthier
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will take place entirely online via Teams: if you would like to attend please email arche-fem-soc[at]st-andrews.ac.uk for details. This will be a short work-in-progress presentation\, lasting 20 minutes\, to leave ample time for discussion.\n\nTitle: Zombie Déjà Vu: Haunted histories of rebuilding after the apocalypse\nAbstract: We are living in a transitional time as our Western societies move out of crisis mode vis-à-vis the COVID-19 pandemic. As such\, different narratives are forming\, including those around COVID long-haulers\, disability\, and “going back to normal”. I am investigating how these narratives are being haunted by the eugenic and ableist attitudes that have shaped our current healthcare system. I am using the figure of the zombie to explore the tension surrounding the inclusion/exclusion of newly (and more) disabled people in our healthcare and public health strategies moving forward.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Zoë Johnson King (Harvard) (co-hosted with CEPPA) "Working on Yourself"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This is a thesis-antitheses-synthesis kind of talk. We begin with a question: How should one react to one’s own moral achievements and moral failures\, and to the moral achievements and moral failures of other people? One answer that might seem initially compelling is that we should be harsher on ourselves than we are on others: we should be modest about our own moral achievements while celebrating others’ moral achievements\, and we should show more leniency in response to others’ moral failures than in response to our own. As compelling as this answer might seem\, a smorgasbord of recent trends in popular moral thought push back against it in various ways\, and it paints an odd picture of how good people are supposed to talk to each other. That’s the thesis and its antitheses. The synthesis is the central idea of this talk: the idea of working on yourself. I’ll say what working on yourself is and why it matters morally\, and I’ll also introduce the idea of a deliberate self-improvement\, which is my name for what you bring about when you try to work on yourself and succeed. With these two notions in hand\, I’ll argue that the initially-compelling answer and its intuitive counterphenomena can all be accommodated by an account that emphasizes the importance of not only working on yourself\, but also encouraging and facilitating others’ work on themselves\, all while recognizing the enormous diversity of impediments to their doing either of these that particular individuals might encounter. We’ll see that some apparent self/other asymmetries have solid metaphysical or moral underpinnings\, while others dissolve. I’ll then discuss some cool upshots and one remaining deeper puzzle; in brief\, the puzzle concerns whether we should prioritize working on ourselves over supporting others’ work on themselves and\, if so\, what could explain this division of labor.
