SUMMARY:Language and Mind Seminar | Martin Abreu Zavaleta (Syracuse University) "Negotiated contextualism and disagreement data"
DESCRIPTION:Suppose I assert ”Jim is rich”. According to negotiated contextualism\, my assertion should be understood as a proposal to adopt a standard of wealth such that Jim counts as ”rich” by that standard. Furthermore\, according to negotiated contextualism\, this is so in virtue of the semantic properties of the word ”rich”. Defenders of negotiated contextualism claim that this view is uniquely well-placed to account for certain disagreement data; for example\, that if your standard for the application of the word ”rich” is more constraining than mine\, you can sensibly assert ”no\, Jim is not rich” without thereby making an incompatible claim. This paper offers a simpler explanation of the data: speakers can sensibly reject a given assertion provided that they think that the asserted sentence is false in the context which they take to be relevant to that sentence’s interpretation. I argue that\, combined with standard semantic tools\, this explanation can account for the original data and for new empirical results. Along the way\, I present new empirical data to argue against negotiated contextualism.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Romy Jaster (Berlin) "Echo Chambers"
DESCRIPTION:**This talk has been cancelled** \nAbstract: The lecture will take an epistemological look at the phenomenon of echo chambers. In public reception\, echo chambers are held responsible for all kinds of problematic developments\, most notably the growing polarization of some democracies and the radicalization of some social groups\, for example the adherents of problematic conspiracy theories. In recent research\, this picture has become controversial. For instance\, Jennifer Lackey has recently argued that echo chambers are epistemically unproblematic\, while empirical research has raised voices doubting that echo chambers exist at all or have a significant prevalence. I will address both lines of argument in this talk. First\, I will reject Lackey’s theoretical objection to the epistemic problem of echo chambers. Then\, I will use the empirical findings to motivate a paradigm shift in thinking about echo chambers\, which I can\, however\, only sketch in broad brushstrokes.

SUMMARY:Epistemic and Practical Normativity Workshop
DESCRIPTION:An attractive and\, until recently\, orthodox view is that the epistemic domain is in an important sense insulated from other normative domains\, for example the moral or the practical more broadly. Recently\, however\, philosophers have suggested that there are important interactions between epistemic normativity and other flavours of normativity. This conference aims to bring together philosophers working at the intersection of ethics\, practical reasoning\, and epistemology in order to better understand these issues. \nProgramme\n9:30-10 Coffee\n10-11:15 David Owens (KCL) “Excuse\, Capacity and Convention”\n11:15-11:30 Coffee\n11:30-12:45 Jessica Isserow (Leeds) “Blame’s Blind Spot”\n12:45-2:00 Lunch\n2-3:15 Berislav Marusic (Edinburgh) “Interpersonal Reasoning”\n3:15-3:30 Coffee\n3:30-4:45 Daniela Dover (Oxford) “Two Kinds of Curiosity” \nFor a hybrid link\, email nk94[at]st-andrews[dot]ac[dot]uk
