SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar Francisca Silva (University of St. Andrews)
DESCRIPTION:Title: FDE worlds or inexact truthmaker semantics? \nAbstract: In this talk I will present models for what minimally rational agents know given what they know that meet several (as I shall claim) plausible desiderata for the knowledge states of non-ideal agents. These models can be given either in terms of a space of possible and impossible worlds that Berto and Jago (2019) call FDE worlds\, or in terms of a space of states satisfying a relation of inexact truthmaking\, when both are conjoined with a specific view of subject matters. As far as the semantics goes\, then\, the two approaches are in equally good standing. Should we prefer a talk of states and inexact truthmaking or of impossible worlds and worldly representation? The answer lies in the underlying metaphysics presupposed by both theoretical approaches. I conclude\, then\, by comparing the prospects of both approaches in terms of their metaphysical commitments.

SUMMARY:Language and Mind Seminar | Daniel Garibay García "Group Lies and Group Bullshit"
DESCRIPTION:Recently\, there has been renewed interest in collective phenomena. Social epistemology has the lead on this topic; but there is a lot left to say on the subject of collective speech. In this talk\, I’m interested in discussing the distinction between group lies and other kinds of deception committed by groups. In this work\, I present a case of group lies that is problematic for most group intention and belief accounts. The main idea is that individuals can lie about P on behalf of a group without the members of the group having any idea (mental state or attitude) about P. I call these external lies. If I’m right this would be not just a surprising result but also problematic data for most accounts of group belief and intention. Possible replies to my claim include modifying our accounts of lies and characterizing my case as a case of bullshiting. A debate about external lies may prove fruitful to discuss how to extend our theories of lies and distinctions between speech acts to the collective case\, and improve our general understanding of deception.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Winnie Ma (KCL) "Towards an Ethics of Belief for AI: with a Focus on AI Profiling and Algorithmic Discrimination"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Philosophical research in AI has hitherto largely focused on the ethics of AI. Here we suggest that the time has come to start a novel area of research in AI – the epistemology of AI\, and in particular the ethics of belief of AI. This paper is a collaboration between an ethicist of belief and a machine learning engineer (Dr. Vincent Valton) to investigate the ways in which extant work in the ethics of (human) belief can be applied to an ethics of AI belief\, and in exciting new topics of interest in the latter domain. The focus of today’s talk will be on the ethics of AI belief with respect to AI profiling beliefs and algorithmic discrimination. I here understand “profiling” as forming a belief about an individual on the basis of well-evidenced (by which I don’t mean morally justified) generalizations about a group or groups to which that individual belongs. And I understand “discrimination” as the differential treatment of an individual based on their membership in a particular group or groups. \n(Joint Work-in-Progress by Winnie Ma and Vincent Valton)
