SUMMARY:Metaphysics Seminar Matteo Nizzardo (University of St. Andrews)
DESCRIPTION:Title: The cost of being an Anti-Haecceitist \nAbstract: Haecceitism is the thesis that there are qualitatively indiscernible and yet distinct possibilities. I argue that Haecceitism is connected to the Identity of Indiscernibles (PII) in the following way: that if you believe PII is not a necessary truth\, then you are forced to accept Haecceitism.

SUMMARY:Language & Mind Seminar: Francois Récanati (Collège de France)
DESCRIPTION:Judgment First \nAccording to Peter Geach\, ‘a proposition may occur in discourse now asserted\, now unasserted’. Geach calls this ‘the Frege point’. It conflicts with the view (held by Aristotle) that to predicate a property of an object is to ascribe the property to the object (i.e.\, to judge/assert that the object has the property). The Frege Point suggests that the propositions generated via predication are intrinsically forceless: force is added from outside\, as it were\, when the act of judging or asserting occurs. There is another option\, however\, which Geach mentions and associates with Spinoza: the cancellation account. According to that account\, which has become popular in recent times\, a thought is assertoric in character unless its force is cancelled and it loses this character\, e.g. by occurring only as an element in a more complicated thought. Different ways of understanding the cancellation account will be presented\, and its relations to the Aristotelian view discussed.

SUMMARY:Conceptual Engineering Seminar: Mari Mikkola (Amsterdam) “Engineering Ideologically Defective Concepts”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: One major motivation for conceptual engineering is that some ways in which we think and talk about reality are defective. Mona Simion\, however\, argues that it is permissible to engineer non-defective concepts too even when they are good enough. Still\, Simion holds that there needs to be normative constraints on when this is legitimate: Engineering mustn’t come with an epistemic loss. I don’t dispute that we can have reasons to engage in continual conceptual maintenance. But some conceptual resources should prima facie be fixed because of serious defects involved: ones I term ‘ideologically defective concepts.’ Contra Simion\, it isn’t possible to engineer such concepts without an epistemic loss and this is the normative ground to engineer. I am not alone in thinking so. Paul-Mikhail Catapang Podosky argues for an expanded version of Simion’s view precisely since Simion’s constraint would make engineering ideologically defective concepts impermissible. Podosky\, I contend\, is right about ways in which Simion’s normative constraint falls short. However\, I argue\, his expanded version also falls short: Podosky’s understanding of how ideological concepts work is not apt to spell out what it means for conceptual defects to hinge on ideology. Here I advance an alternative diagnosis of such defectiveness. My analysis suggests that it is extremely difficult\, if not impossible\, to re-engineer ideological concepts. But the engineer can still engage in de novo engineering together with conceptual ethics. This makes conceptual engineering of ideological concepts much trickier than Simion and Podosky’s views suggest. But ethics is hard and conceptual ethics is no exception.

SUMMARY:Feminist Philosophy and Social Theory Seminar: Francisca Silva\, "Questions and Gender Questioning"
DESCRIPTION:This week’s seminar will be a talk by Francisca Silva titled “Questions and Gender Questioning”. It will be a hybrid seminar and you can attend either in person\, at Castlecliffe Seminar Room G5W\, or online\, via Teams. For further information or details to join the online meeting\, please email arche-fem-soc[at]st-andrews.ac.uk. \nTitle: Questions and gender questioning \nAbstract: Mainly since the work of Belnap and Steel (1976)\, a growing tradition in metaphysics and formal semantics has modelled questions as their respective direct complete answers. I will highlight how this way of modelling questions can help shed light on a significant process for trans people – that of questioning one’s own gender identity. Namely\, the framework emphasises how the act of asking questions highlights certain features of reality while obscuring others and therefore makes it clear how the way agents understand reality also depends on what questions they try to give answers to. After presenting the general theoretical framework and introducing a novel notion of a full and partial grasp on a question\, I will proceed to consider the range of questions that might be involved in gender questioning\, as well as various factors that might impose a limit on the range of possibilities agents are responsive to when considering such questions. To make the discussion more manageable\, I will focus on the particular experience of questioning trans women who report not being able to determine whether their experiences motivate a positive answer to the question “Am I a woman?” or merely to the question “Do I want to be a woman?”. I conclude by showing how such experiences arise as the two questions become conflated\, as well as by drawing some normative consequences from what is a presently unjust state of affairs affecting trans people more broadly.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Seminar: Petronella Randell (St Andrews) "The dilemma of transformative decision-making" [Hybrid]
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Transformative decisions are almost always framed as a problem for decision theory. However\, it seems that the problem has no real bite when presented in this way – there are many ways it can be avoided\, and most don’t incur significant costs. For example\, the problem only arises on a specific (nonstandard) conception of decision theory\, and even then\, it only then becomes a problem if we accept the requirement that outcomes must be evaluated from the subjective perspective. I think transformative decisions are misconstrued as a problem for decision theory. Paul’s argument is (or should be) that transformative decisions can be made rationally\, but only at the cost of authenticity. The problem of transformative experience is more accurately described as a dilemma between rationality and authenticity. Currently\, the dilemma is under-explored and ill-motivated. I will argue that a conflict between authenticity and rationality in transformative decision-making arises when we take the commitments that transformative decisions involve seriously. \nHybrid talk.
