SUMMARY:Metaphysics Seminar Sandra M. López (University of St. Andrews and University of Salamanca)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Where relevance meets many-valued logic: six interesting systems and their  semantics.\n \nAbstract: \nIn my doctoral dissertation\, six new 4-valued logics of interest within the context of non-classical logics and in particular\, logics in the family of relevance logic\, were developed and studied in depth by means of different kinds of semantics. These logics are built upon implicative variants of Brady’s 4-valued matrix MBN4 which verify Routley and Meyer’s basic logic B. \nOn the one hand\, Routley and Meyer’s logic B is an essential system among weak relevance logics due to the fact that it has traditionally served as a starting point to develop one of their most characteristic semantics: Routley-Meyer ternary relational semantics. On the other hand\, Brady developed a central system among many-valued and relevance logics: the logic determined by the 4-valued matrix MBN4. This logic has been considered as the most suitable for relevant contexts involving inconsistent and incomplete information. As a matter of fact\, Brady chose the label BN4 for his system because it contains Routley and Meyer’s basic logic B and has neither as one of its four characteristic truth-values. \nThe aim of this talk is twofold: (1) show the main properties of the six aforementioned systems and (2) explain the main features of the different semantics which they were endowed with.

SUMMARY:Language & Mind Seminar: Carrie Figdor (University of Iowa)
DESCRIPTION:Semantic Implications of Evolutionary Theory for Psychology\n\n\nEvolutionary explanations imply ontological commitment to characters. “Character” is a technical term in biology for the units that capture the evolutionary trajectories of traits. I will explain what characters are\, what ontological commitment to characters involves\, and what this ontological commitment implies for our understanding of cognitive abilities and our uses of cognitive terms to refer to those abilities.

SUMMARY:Conceptual Engineering Seminar: Steffen Koch (Bielefeld University) & Jakob Ohlhorst (University of Vienna) "The Mind-Expanding Powers of Conceptual Engineering"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Conceptual engineering is the process of assessing and improving our conceptual repertoire. Some authors have claimed that introducing or revising concepts through conceptual engineering can go as far as expanding the realm of thinkable thoughts and thus enable us to form beliefs\, hypotheses\, wishes or desires that we are currently unable to form. As exciting as this idea certainly is\, it has never been developed or defended properly. In this talk\, we pursue a twofold goal. First\, to offer a theory of what such mind-expanding conceptual engineering is and what distinguishes it from other kinds of conceptual engineering; second\, to show that this kind of conceptual engineering is possible\, both in theory and in practice\, and to explain how it can be pursued. A central starting point for the account is Susan Carey’s work on conceptual discontinuities and Quinean bootstrapping.

SUMMARY:Feminist Philosophy and Social Theory Seminar: Emilia Wilson "Disability\, Ableism & Assisted Dying"
DESCRIPTION:Title: Disability\, Ableism & Assisted Dying \n\nPlease note that the presentation will include potentially distressing examples of medical ableism and ableist language. \nAbstractMy aim in this presentation is to present a view on which disability is constructed by ableist ideology and examine some upshots for medical ethics. I begin by contrasting medicalised and social models of disability. I propose examining ableist ideology\, attempting to identify some core characteristics of ableism\,to identify the social location of disability. I use this account to argue that we can make no principled distinction between supposedly ‘medical’ versus ‘environmental’ suffering. If correct this means that many supposedly ‘moderate’ positions in medical policy\, which carve exceptions for medicalised suffering\, are flawed. I end by discussing some implications for\, and concerns about\, current policy proposals in Canada and Scotland. \n\nThe seminar will take place 4-6 pm Wednesday\, May 25th and you can attend either online via Teams (link below) or in person at Castlecliffe room 5GW. To receive the link to attend the online meeting\, please email arche-fem-soc@st-andrews.ac.uk.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Seminar: Roy Sorensen (St Andrews) "TIME TRAVELER CONFIRMS THE FIVE MINUTE HYPOTHESIS!" [Hybrid]
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Many epistemological principles are formulated temporally: a conclusion can be learned from a premise only if the premise is known before the conclusion\, a belief is justified if previously believed\, a belief is self-undermining if it does not leave enough time for it to be rationally formed. But what matters for any norm is personal time\, not time. Personal time is a time-like relation (roughly\, the time measured by your wristwatch) that knits together temporal parts so that they conform to familiar laws of nature. Processes that disrupt developmental sequences (artificially aging\, progeria\, high speed travel) threaten inconsistent narratives. These ostensible contradictions lead non-actual phenomena\, such as time travel\, to be over-judged as impossible. Indeed\, the need to draw a distinction between time and personal time emerged most forcefully for those seeking a consistent reading of this genre of fiction. This literary illumination allows us to discern a less visible need to draw the distinction for all types of value: prudential\, moral\, aesthetic\, and epistemic. \nHybrid talk. Room: School V.
