SUMMARY:Metaphysics Seminar Franz Berto (University of St. Andrews and ILLC)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Cognitive Synonymy: a Dead Parrot? \nAbstract: \nSentences φ and ψ are cognitive synonyms for one when they play the same role in one’s cognitive life: what one understands given either\, one does\, given the other; what one concludes (deductively\, abductively\, inductively\, etc.) supposing either\, one does\, supposing the other; one would revise one’s beliefs in the same way after learning either; etc. \nThe notion is pervasive in linguistic and philosophical semantics\, cogpsi\, and AI – but elusive: it’s bound to be hyperintensional\, but excessive fine-graining\, e.g.\, by indiscriminate use of ‘open’ impossible worlds\, would trivialize it and there are independent reasons for some coarse-graining. It should be sensitive to subject matters and conceptual limitations\, but this stands in the way of a natural algebra: even non-distributive or non-modular lattices won’t do. \nBesides\, a cognitively adequate individuation of content may be intransitive due to ‘dead parrot’ series: sequences φ1\, …\, φn where adjacent φi\,φj are cognitive synonyms for one while φ1 and φn are not. But finding an intransitive account is hard: Fregean equipollence won’t do and an impossibility result by Leitgeb shows that it wouldn’t satisfy a minimal compositionality principle . Sed contra\, there are reasons for transitivity\, too (from substitutivity salva veritate\, non-mononotonicity\, and uniformity principles). \nIn spite of this mess\, we come up with a formal semantics capturing this whole jumble of desiderata\, thereby giving evidence that the notion is coherent. We then re-assess dead parrot cases in its light.

SUMMARY:Language & Mind Seminar: Mark Textor (KCL)
DESCRIPTION:Sensory Feeling as the Source of the Self: \nThe distinction between I and not-I is of fundamental importance in European philosophy. What grounds this distinction? I will introduce and examine a once prominent\, but now neglected answer to this question and isolate its plausible core. The German philosopher and psychologist Herman Lotze (1817-81) argued that sensory feeling is the ground of the I/not-I distinction. I will expound Lotze’s answer by focussing on his detailed theory of sensory feeling. After uncovering a problem for Lotze\, I will go on and defend the spirit of Lotze’s approach by drawing on a proposal by Lotze’s student James Ward (1843-1925). In this proposal coenesthesis (Gemeingefühl) or universal feeling is central.

SUMMARY:Conceptual Engineering Seminar: Elisabeth Camp (Rutgers University) "From Point of View to Perspective"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In both ordinary speech and theoretical discourse\, we often talk about ‘points of view’ and ‘perspectives’ to gesture toward ways in which agents differ in their interpretations of a common informational content. While such perceptual language is ubiquitous and intuitive\, its application to abstract domains like religion\, politics\, art\, and science must be metaphorical. I introduce three analogies with perception\, sketch my own view of a perspective as an open-ended disposition to notice\, structure\, and respond to information in an intuitive\, holistic way\, and identify some payoffs of this analysis.

SUMMARY:Feminist Philosophy and Social Theory Seminar: Emilia Wilson\, "Disability\, Ableism\, & Assisted Dying"
DESCRIPTION:For this week’s seminar\, Emilia Wilson will be presenting a work in progress titled “Disability\, Ableism\, & Assisted Dying”. The seminar will take a hybrid format\, meaning you can attend online (via Teams) or in person (at Seminar Room 5GW in Castlecliffe). For more information and a link for the online meeting\, please email arche-fem-soc[at]st-andrews.ac.uk. \nTitle: “Disability\, Ableism\, & Assisted Dying” \nAbstract: My aim in this presentation is to present a view on which disability is constructed by ableist ideology and examine some upshots for medical ethics. I begin by contrasting medicalised and social models of disability. I propose examining ableist ideology as a methodology to identify the social location of disability\, attempting to identify some core characteristics ableism. I use this account to argue that we can make no principled distinction between supposedly ‘medical’ versus ‘environmental’ suffering. If correct this means that many supposedly ‘moderate’ positions in medical policy\, which carve exceptions for medicalised suffering\, are flawed. I end by discussing some concerns about a recent assisted dying member’s bill entered into Scottish Parliament.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Seminar: Ole Hjortland (Bergen) "From naturalism to anti-exceptionalism"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Parts of Quine’s philosophy of logic has been revitalized in the recent debate about anti-exceptionalism. According to both the Quinean naturalist and the anti-exceptionalist\, logic is revisable\, and the revisions come about through methods of theory-choice not unlike those of the sciences. But there are also important differences between contemporary anti-exceptionalism and naturalism. We compare the Quinean method of theory-choice with anti-exceptionalist alternatives\, and argue that the latter better supports existing revisionary arguments.
