SUMMARY:Language and Mind seminar: Haoxu Wang (St Andrews)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Fundamental Consciousness with Fruitful Features\nAbstract: Panpsychists argue that understanding human consciousness will become significantly easier if we posit that consciousness exists at the fundamental level of the universe. For instance\, if fundamental particles possess consciousness\, it seems not so strange that complex entities like humans can also have consciousness. However\, there is one significant challenge for panpsychism\, the infamous “combination problem”. How can the consciousness of different fundamental entities combine to produce the consciousness of a human being? Numerous attempts have been made to address the combination problem. However\, currently\, there is no widely accepted viewpoint that any of these attempts can effectively resolve the issue. In this paper\, I intend to propose a novel solution to the combination problem. Roughly\, I will suggest that human consciousness is identical to the consciousness of micro fundamental entities. My proposal introduces a significant novelty by constructing four main theses: the Fundamentality Thesis\, the Heterogeneity Thesis\, the Structure Matters Thesis\, and the Successive Subjects Thesis.\nThe paper is outlined as follows: Section 1 is the introduction. Section 2 offers additional background on the combination problem and briefly introduces existing responses. Section 3 presents my own theory for addressing the combination problem\, arguing for its four core theses. Section 4 will locate my theory within a spectrum of some existing responses to the problem and highlight some of its advantages over others. Finally\, Section 5 will address some potential criticisms of my theory. Overall\, this theory not only addresses the combination problem but also introduces a concrete framework for understanding phenomenal consciousness. In this sense\, this new perspective\, to some extent\, contributes to the most crucial issue\, namely accounting for human consciousness\, in the philosophy of mind. Specifically\, since my theory is a panpsychist variant of Russellian Monism\, I argue for Russellian panpsychism as well.

SUMMARY:Unity Seminar: Maureen Donnelly "Individual and Joint Situations"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: When trying to make sense of another person’s feeling or actions\, we sometimes speak of “imagining being in their situation ” (or “standing in their shoes”). I take this kind of talk to assume that situations are frameworks for making sense of attitudes and actions that may vary relative to persons.  The purpose of this paper is to propose an account of situations that encompasses both individual situations (the situations of individual persons) and joint situations (the joint situations of two or more persons). I propose that individual situations are maximal orientated facts determined by the ways things are qualified relative to a particular person. Joint situations combine the situations of two or more persons by suppressing conflicting qualifications. All joint situations are unified in that they are logically consistent. But different joint situations may retain more of less of the meaning-endowing and action-guiding structure of individual situations. Only joint situations which retain significant situating structure embody a unified interpersonal orientation.

SUMMARY:Social Metametaphysics Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Social Metametaphysics Workshop \nEvent Description \nThe aim of this workshop is to bring together scholars to discuss the nature and methodology of social metaphysics. Interest in social metaphysics in recent decades has exploded and questions about the status and ambitions of social metaphysics are now taking centre stage. This workshop aims to consolidate this current methodological turn by hosting a two-day event where participants can discuss questions like the following. How do the traditional questions about the aims and methods of metaphysics apply to debates in social metaphysics? Are traditional distinctions between metaphysical realism\, deflationism\, and pragmatism useful for making sense of the status of properties\, entities\, or kinds that are socially constructed? How do the projects of social metaphysics relate to inquiries into the nature of social reality that have been traditionally conducted within social science and social theory (e.g. feminist theory\, sociology\, economics\, etc.)? How should social metaphysicians understand the epistemology of social metaphysics\, especially given the widespread view that ordinary thinking about the nature of social reality has been systematically distorted by ideology? What role should moral and political values play in social metaphysics? In what ways might embracing normative constraints on social metaphysical theorising impact the status or epistemology of the resulting theories? \nWorkshop Programme \nDay 1 \n10.00 – 10.30 Coffee and Welcome \n10.30 – 12.00 Elanor Taylor (Johns Hopkins) ‘Explanatory Metametaphysics’ \n12.00 – 13.30 Lunch \n13.30 – 15.00 Naomi Thompson (Bristol) ‘Social Construction as Social Explanation’ \n15.00 – 15.30 Coffee \n15.30 – 17.00 Esa Díaz-León (Barcelona) ‘Social Constructionism Revisited’ \n18.30 Speaker Dinner \nDay 2 \n10.00 – 10.30 Coffee \n10.30 – 12.00 Asya Passinsky (Central European University) ‘Pluralism and Amelioration’ \n12.00 – 13.30 Lunch \n13.30 – 15.00 Matthew J. Cull (Trinity College Dublin) ‘Feminist Deflationism: Metametaphysics\, Subject Matter\, and Method’ \n15.00 – 15.30 Coffee \n15.30 – 17.00 Kevin Richardson (Duke) ‘Enemies to Lovers: the Metaphysician and the Pragmatist’ \n This event is affiliated with the Feminist Philosophy and Social Theory Research Group \nOrganiser: Jade Fletcher (jef1@st-andrews.ac.uk)
