DESCRIPTION:Title:  ‘What can(not) social norms do?’ \nAbstract: In this (very) exploratory paper I investigate the relationship between social normativity and other domains of normativity. I suggest that given a metaphysically productive relationship between pernicious social norms and ideological social construction\, pernicious social norms can create ontologically oppressive kinds\, and consequently this can mar some seemingly valuable features of epistemic normativity and prudential normativity. Given this picture\, I argue that this gives feminist metaphysicians reason to embrace more objectivist conceptions of moral normativity.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Misogynistic Dehumanization\n\nAbstract: The idea that women qua women can be dehumanized has been dismissed by feminist philosophers\, like Kate Manne\, and by philosophers of dehumanization\, like David Livingstone Smith. Against these skeptics\, I argue that we can and should use dehumanization to explain an important strand of misogyny. When they are dehumanized\, women are represented simultaneously as human and as inhuman embodiments of the natural world. They therefore appear as magical\, contaminating\, sexualized threats towards whom violence is acceptable or even necessary. Misogynistic dehumanization is important to understanding atrocities like the early modern European witch-hunts\, but also contemporary phenomena like incel violence.

DESCRIPTION:Title: It’s personal and it’s fine \nAbstract: Believing is something that one does\, or so one might say. Seeing as well. Detecting the edges of objects is not. Believing is a personal state. Seeing as well. Detecting is a sub-personal event or process. The personal/sub-personal distinction is intuitive. In recent papers\, some have argued that it is problematic. I argue that it is not. Two criticisms are that it is not principled (cf. Mason Westfall) and that it potentially stifles the work of cognitive scientists by misdescribing their practices (cf. Robert Rupert.) The personal/sub-personal distinction\, as applied to states\, is a special case of a distinction between the state something is in and the states its parts are in. Further commitments are not necessary and only come down the line. As a consequence\, one can both take it that there is such a distinction in cognitive science and that it puts no external constraint on the activity of cognitive scientists

DESCRIPTION:Title: Feminism and Multiculturalism: Measuring Gendered Cultural Harms \nAbstract: Deeply ingrained in the multiculturalism versus feminism debate is the idea that certain minority practices are more deserving of attention and criticism for their misogynistic undertones than other (liberal) practices. In this talk\, I’ll consider one of the potential reasons for this asymmetrical focus on minorities. Such argument maintains that many minority cultural practices are simply more harmful to women than their Western counterparts. I’ll go over how the ‘harm argument’ is embedded in the literature\, and then assess its conduciveness. Ultimately\, I’ll argue the ‘harm argument’ fails through its ill-suited selective points of comparisons\, its lack of contextual awareness\, and through its heavy reliance on ‘Gender Orientalist’ postulations.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Inference behaviour semantics for all* connectives in two-dimensional sequent calculi \nAbstract: In this talk\, I present inference behaviour semantics (IBS) for connectives in two-dimensional sequent calculi. IBS is a novel approach to proof-theoretic semantics (PTS) that emphasises Wittgenstein’s conception of ‘meaning as use’\, alongside Gentzen’s idea of operational rules as connective definitions. The core idea of IBS is to explore how proof rules determine the way we use connectives. \nTo implement this idea\, I analyse all rule parameters that affect connective usage by proving global harmony in minimal derivability relations. This method allows me to define IBS for any connective definable in two-dimensional sequent calculi. The findings offer a meaning-theoretic explanation for the co-determination effects recently observed by Dicher and offer a fresh perspective on the relationships between connectives and their logics. \nUltimately\, IBS opens a new avenue for PTS\, providing a fine-grained local analysis of connective use and meaning\, with the potential to evolve our understanding of the connectives.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Beyond Speech: Pictures and Oppression \nAbstract: Philosophical work on oppressive forms of expression strongly tends to give verbal and written linguistic expression pride of place. When it comes to pictures\, there is a tendency to either treat them as if they were language – one sees this in feminist work on pornography – or worse\, to ignore pictures altogether when the topic at hand least typically pictorial or typically has a significant pictorial dimension – one sees this in Jason Stanley’s work on propaganda. \nAgainst this linguisticism\, I argue that central and influential forms of oppressive “speech” are in fact pictorial and that to understand how they do their oppressive work\, we must approach pictures as pictures rather than as forms of spoken or written language. In this paper\, I first examine one glaring case of linguisticism\, then say something about what I think is going on here\, and finally briefly examine examples of oppressive pictures and give the outlines of an explanation of how they do their oppressive work. \nPlease note that I will be discussing pictures that glorify and eroticize rape\, and pictures that mock\, shame\, and demean Black persons. I will also mention pictures of lynchings. I will also briefly show some of these pictures\, though not the lynching pictures. I will not leave any pictures up for long because they are triggering or otherwise injurious for many of us. That\, after all\, is part of the point of this paper. I will give warning before I show or mention these pictures.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Why Professors Should Not Sleep With Their Students – The Epistemology of Consent and Professor-Student Sex \nAbstract: My main interest is explaining the wrong involved in professors (or any teaching staff) sleeping with their students\, and to consider the viability of explaining at least some of the harm in a consent framework. While alternative explanations for the wrong of professor-student sex have been offered (recently: Srinivasan 2021)\, I argue here that professors ought to not sleep with their students due issues relating to sexual consent and the lack thereof. I argue that apparently consensual professor-student relationships are either (1) actually non-consensual or (2) minimally involve unacceptable moral risk. To establish this\, I consider relevant sociological and psychological research regarding those relationships\, including student self-reports\, and studies of the phenomenon of delayed disclosure (and recognition) of sexual violence.
