DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Paul Conlan (St Andrews) \nEntitlement of Cognitive Project and The Adoption Problem\nKeywords: Epistemology of Logic\, Entitlement Epistemology\, Adoption Problem \nWright (2004) argues that we are warranted in the belief that modus ponens (MPP) is valid via an entitlement of cognitive project. Wright’s entitlement epistemology extends further\, however: Wright (2014)\, suggests that the warrant for ‘cornerstone’ beliefs like ‘there is an external world’ is generated by epistemically consequentialist Reichenbachian dominance reasoning. One strand of objections to the 2014 position is that the warrant provided is pragmatic rather than epistemic (see e.g. Pritchard (2007)\, Jenkins\, (2007)). This paper aims to suggest that the objection that the anti-sceptical warrants are merely pragmatic easily generalises to warrants generated by entitlement of cognitive project\, and Wright cannot avail himself of the strategy used to disarm the objection in the case of the anti-sceptical entitlement to fend off the objection that the entitlement to the validity of MPP provides merely pragmatic warrant. Instead\, I suggest that the entitlement to the validity of MPP cannot generate a pragmatic warrant at all. I will argue that given a plausible principle regarding pragmatic warrants and Kripke’s ‘Adoption Problem’ (See Padro (2015)\, Finn (2019))\, the warrant for the validity of MPP provided by entitlement of cognitive project must be something other than a pragmatic warrant.

DESCRIPTION:April 9\, 3pm-5pm\, St Salvator’s Quad\, School II \nThe Lecture will be followed by a wine reception in Edgecliffe. \nTitle: Commodification and the Economics of Feminist Activism \nAbstract: The resurgence of feminist activism in recent years has been accompanied by the emergence of feminist commodities\, some by small feminist businesses\, others mass-marketed by chains\, some sold purely for profit\, others attached to donations to feminist and other social justice causes. This entails two shifts in feminist activism: first\, the increasing reliance on charitable giving through commodity consumption as a means of feminist political action and second\, the transfer of the work of feminist activism from movements to enterprises. This paper examines the implications of such feminist practices by juxtaposing them with past instances of feminist activism engaged with the commodities. Selling things has been a part of funding feminist activism since the women’s suffrage movement. During the second wave\, feminists likewise had to make various compromises or take political risks in order to secure funding for activism. I examine the parallels between contemporary and past economic modes of feminist activism\, and in so doing analyse how the intensified turn to commodification and the enterprise form change the politics of feminism itself. \nJoint event with the St Andrews Institute for Gender Studies. DESCRIPTION:Title: Explanations in logic\n\nAbstract: To explain phenomena in the world is a central human activity and one of the main goals of rational inquiry. There are several types of explanation: one can explain by drawing an analogy\, as one can explain by dwelling on the causes (e.g. see Woodward (2004)). Amongst these different kinds of explanation\, in the last decade philosophers have become receptive to those explanations which explain by providing the reasons why a statement is true; these explanations are often called conceptual explanations (e.g. see Betti (2010)\, Huneman (2018)). The main aim of the paper is  to propose a logical account of conceptual explanations. We will do so by using the resources of proof theory\, in particular the sequent calculus. The results we provide not only shed light on conceptual explanations themselves\, but also on the role that logic and logical tools might play in the burgeoning field of inquiry concerning explanations.

What does caring for a place look like in the day-to-day? Dr Roxani Krystalli’s current research\, with Dr Philipp Schulz at the University of Bremen\, investigates what is political about relations and practices of love and care. Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council in partnership with the German Research Foundation\, the project sheds light on the politics of love and care in the wake of loss\, including the violence of war\, habitat loss\, climate change\, and other sources of collective grief. SUMMARY:Epistemology Seminar: Falbo on Inquiry
DESCRIPTION:Discussion session on “Inquiring Minds Want to Improve” by Arianna Falbo \nAbstract: \nMuch of the recent work on epistemology of inquiry defends two related theses. First\, inquiry into a question rationally prohibits believing an answer to that question. Second\, knowledge is the aim of inquiry. I develop a series of cases which indicate that inquiry is not as narrow as these views suggest. These cases can be accommodated if we take a broader approach and understand inquiry as aiming at epistemic improvement\, described more generally. This approach captures a wider range of inquiring phenomena because it accounts for forms of epistemic improvement that fall short of\, or go beyond\, coming to know the answer to a question.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Alethic Pluralism and the Meaning of “True” \nAbstract: Alethic pluralism is the view that there are many ways for truth-bearers to be true since different properties realise truth in different domains. Thus\, especially in its strong version\, pluralism amounts to the claim that the notion of truth we ordinarily employ is actually directly linked with a plurality of realizer properties. At the same time\, this conceptual unity is normally taken to be mirrored at the linguistic level by the existence of a single truth predicate “True”\, which must then also be characterised in plural terms. However\, although much has been said about the relation between the concept of truth and its realizers\, comparatively little attention has been devoted to the meaning of our ordinary predicate “True” and to model the plurality allegedly appearing in it.  In fact\, if the concept of truth is realized by different properties in different domain\, we should expect that different properties will also be relevant for different truth ascriptions (i.e. for different uses of the term “True”). In this paper I will offer a detailed discussion of various ways of modelling the alleged plurality in the meaning of “True”. First\, I will consider and discard some constant plural semantic accounts\, showing that “True” is importantly variable in meaning. Thene\, I will discuss and also criticise some options for a context-sensitive semantic analysis of this predicate\, showing that “True” is actually insensitive to contexts\, standardly conceived. Finally\, I will conclude this paper by arguing the “True”\, within a strong pluralist picture\, is actually polysemous. \n

While transgender studies is oriented against providing definitive answers\, the field does possess a history and an emergent set of critical tools\, both similar to and yet divergent from the more institutionally embraced field of queer studies. Drawing on Susan Stryker’s characterization of transgender studies as queer theory’s “evil twin\,” this talk explores the critical relation enacted between the two fields: Rather than envisioning them as opposites\, it explores their relation as a fruitful paradox in which each discourse problematizes and yet enlivens the other’s claims. It then demonstrates trans analytics through a reading of John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982).

DESCRIPTION:Title: Beliefs based on conflicting and uncertain evidence: connecting Dempster-Shafer theory and the topology of evidence \nAbstract:\nOne problem to solve in the context of information fusion\, decision-making\, and other artificial intelligence challenges is to compute justified beliefs based on evidence. In real-life examples\, this evidence may be inconsistent\, incomplete\, or uncertain\, making the problem of evidence fusion highly non-trivial. In this talk\, I will present a new model for measuring degrees of beliefs based on possibly inconsistent\, incomplete\, and uncertain evidence\, by combining tools from Dempster-Shafer Theory and Topological Models of Evidence. Our belief model is more general than the aforementioned approaches in two important ways: (1) it can reproduce them when appropriate constraints are imposed\, and\, more notably\, (2) it is flexible enough to compute beliefs according to various standards that represent agents’ evidential demands. The latter novelty allows to compute an agent’s (possibly) distinct degrees of belief\, based on the same evidence\, in situations when\, e.g\, the agent prioritizes avoiding false negatives and when it prioritizes avoiding false positives. Finally\, I will discuss further research directions and philosophical loose ends\, time permitting\, introduce a logic for comparing strengths of evidence and belief. \nThis talk is joint work between the speaker (Aybüke Özgün)\, Daira Pinto Prieto and Ronald de Haan\, and is based on the underlying topological formalism developed in collaboration with Alexandru Baltag\, Nick Bezhanishvili\, and Sonja Smets. \nThe speaker notes that “The talk will not assume any background in Dempster-Shafer theory or topological models for evidence.” And that “[she] will focus on the motivation and overall structure of the proposed framework rather than the technical details.”

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Catarina Dutilh Novaes (VU Amsterdam & St Andrews) \nA Foucauldian critique of the epistemic injustice research program \nCatarina Dutilh Novaes (joint work with Merel Talbi and Solmu Anttila)\n\nSince the publication of Fricker’s groundbreaking Epistemic Injustice: Power and the Ethics of Knowing (2007)\, vibrant debates on the complex relations between knowledge\, ethics and power have ensued\, arguably giving rise to a specific research program (in Lakatos’ sense). In contrast with apolitical social epistemology\, the epistemic injustice research program problematizes the roles of power and social identities in epistemic processes. Two of its core assumptions are: there is a reasonably neat separation between epistemic phenomena and ethical-political phenomena (even if they often intersect); while frequent\, occurrences of epistemic injustice are deviations from the norm that can be redressed—epistemic injustice is a bug\, not a feature.\n\nIn this talk\, I offer a critique of the epistemic injustice research program thus conceived\, drawing on broadly Foucauldian ideas on the relations between power and knowledge. I focus on the second assumption above\, specifically by revisiting Curry’s critique of Fricker’s and Medina’s respective analyses of To Kill a Mocking Bird\, and by presenting a similar critique of Lackey’s recent work on criminal testimonial injustice. In both cases\, the analyses of testimonial injustice as credibility deficit (Fricker and Medina) or as credibility excess (Lackey on confessions) miss the role and functions of these practices in perpetuating oppressive power structures (in these specific cases\, white supremacy). Thus seen\, epistemic injustice is a feature\, not a bug\, requiring much more than epistemic strategies to be redressed.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Can a Russellian Monist Be a Genuine Physicalist?\n\nAbstract:\nCurrently\, Russellian Monism is a cutting-edge theory in the discussion of phenomenal consciousness. It has the potential to retain the advantages of both narrow physicalism and narrow dualism by locating phenomenal consciousness in a fundamentally unified universe\, having it play essential causal roles in the physical aspect\, and at the same time respecting its specific features.   Many see Russellian Monism as an opportunity to construct a new version of physicalism\, Russellian physicalism\, which has more advantages than narrow physicalism because it can avoid the difficulties faced by narrow physicalism\, especially those posed by the knowledge argument (Jackson\, 1982; 1986)\, the explanatory gap argument (Levine\, 1983; 2006)\, and the conceivability argument (Chalmers\, 2009). But the issue here is more complex. Some argue that a genuine or full-blooded physicalist must deny that there is anything specific to phenomenal consciousness at the fundamental level of the universe. Russellian Monism takes intrinsic natures (or quiddities) underlying structures and relations at the fundamental level in the universe as the keys to explaining the generation of high-level phenomenal consciousness\, which is itself the high-level intrinsic nature of high-level structural systems such as human brains. However\, it is argued that Russellian fundamental quiddities must be specific to consciousness\, and thus\, Russellian physicalism is itself an inconsistent theory. This is bad news for physicalists in general.\nIn this paper\, I will argue that it is compatible for a Russellian Monist to be a genuine physicalist or that the concept of “Russellian physicalism” is consistent. There have been some illuminating arguments for the compatibility on this issue\, but I will argue that they\, in some sense\, miss the core point of the challenge of incompatibility or inconsistency to Russellian physicalism. After setting out this core point\, I will offer my own responses.

DESCRIPTION:Title: grounding metaphysics on Reddit posts\, a work in progress. \nAbstract: In this presentation I will be walking us through the methodological challenges I face in writing the second chapter of my thesis. Broadly\, my thesis is an attempt to ameliorate the concept of ‘gender dysphoria’. The first chapter argued that the current mainstream construals of gender dysphoria are ethically and descriptively inaccurate of the phenomenon in question. The aim of the second chapter is to provide an alternative definition of gender dysphoria that is able to meet the desiderata the previously considered construals failed to meet. In order to do this I have three steps planned: The first is identifying paradigmatic dysphoric/euphoric-like experiences in trans* testimony from Reddit. The second step is a stipulation of two new ‘dysphoria/euphoria’ concept pairs in light of the testimony. The third step reintegrates the ameliorated concepts within testimonial case studies in order to demonstrate two things: First\, that the concept pairs clearly track real features of the world. Second\, that the concept pairs can provide a full account of the nature of gender dysphoria.
