DESCRIPTION:Title: Causes and correlations in the link between language and mindreading \nAbstract: This paper proposes a developmental link between language and mindreading. It puts forward two contrasting ways of interpreting this link. One reads the link as causal. On this reading\, language development contributes to the development of mindreading\, so that mindreading could not develop normally had it not been for language. The other reads the link as correlational. This is the pragmatic view. On this reading language development merely contributes to task performance\, and not mindreading development itself\, because language helps the child to correctly interpret the experimenter’s question in the context of a mindreading task. I find that the causal reading is better supported than the correlational reading on two grounds: First\, sometimes subjects’ development in verbal and non-verbal tasks is mirrored\, indicating only a small role for pragmatic factors. Second\, some experiments avoid pragmatic factors entirely but still show major developmental effects from language. I conclude thus that there is a developmental link between language and mindreading\, and that it is a causal one.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Avoid Inconsistency? Two Accounts of Incompatibility \nAbstract: Many take inconsistent states to be not only self-incompatible\, but also to be incompatible with every other state\, whether consistent or inconsistent. On one way of construing such approaches\, two states are incompatible if and only if their fusion is inconsistent (i.e.\, a contradiction can be derived from the resulting state). Having as a background work that has been developed on negation as expressing incompatibility or ruling out\, for instance by Michael Dunn (1993\, 1996)\, Greg Restall (2000) and Franz Berto (2015) (and the latter two together in Berto and Restall (2019))\, as well as work on subtle and blatant inconsistencies by Jago (2014) and Berto and Jago (2019)\, I will explore the prospects of an account of incompatibility according to which two states are incompatible if and only if a contradiction is more easily derivable from the fusion than from any of the parts of the fused states.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this chapter\, I present a novel argument for optimism about moral testimony\, the view that it is permissible to rely on moral testimony when forming one’s moral beliefs. The argument is simple: it is permissible to rely on one’s own moral beliefs formed in the past even if the underlying reasons for the belief are no longer accessible to the agent. But there is no (relevant) difference between relying on one’s past self and other agents – or if there is\, it cuts the wrong way. Recognising that reliance on intrapersonal moral testimony is permissible should thus lead us to conclude that reliance on interpersonal moral testimony is likewise permissible. I explore some consequences for both optimism and pessimism about moral testimony following these considerations and argue that the discussion opens up the possibility for a more nuanced optimism about moral testimony.

DESCRIPTION:Title: The Group Speech Acts Landscape\nAbstract: The objective of this work is to build a map of the views in the group speech acts debate.  My aim is to get a clearer picture of the landscape: find where the different proposals stand in relation to each other (find kinships and disagreements) and\, importantly\, distinguish different aims that theories can have when accounting for speech acts. I follow Fogal\, Harris & Moss’s (2018) landscape of the contemporary views on individual speech acts. The plan is to build an analogous map for the group speech acts views. To correctly map the view\, I argue that we should distinguish between two questions: the performance question\, “What does it take for a group to perform a speech act?” and the force question\, “What distinguishes the force of different group speech acts?”. In answering the first question\, we are interested in knowing when a speech act belongs to (or is rightly attributable to) groups and not to (or not just to) individuals. In the second\, we are interested in answering if what distinguishes group speech acts from each other is the same as with individual speech acts or if the group and individual cases are different in regard to the actions being performed and not just how they are being performed.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Topics in Counterfactual Semantics \nAbstract: This paper develops a 2-component update semantics for counterfactual conditionals. It does so by taking basic update semantics and giving it two twists\, one   mereotopicological and one more structural in flavor. This framework\, in conjunction with ideas from rhetorical structure theory RST and segmented discourse representation theory SDRT is interesting in that it can help explain a variety of phenomena associated with counterfactual discourse\, that more basic update semantics struggle with. On this account\, meanings are understood as ways of updating the cognitive states of individuals who want to incorporate the information and subject matter conveyed by them. Counterfactuals (and conditionalities more broadly) are then analyzed compositionally through this lens. One biproduct of this theory\, other than a more fine-grained notion of meaning than in traditional update semantics\, is an attractive account of modal subordination which is modelled as a form of dynamic topic sensitivity.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Seminar: Emilia Wilson (St Andrews) "Testimonial Distortion and Hermeneutical Backfire"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: It has been widely discussed that systematic communicative disablements – such as disbelief\, misinterpretation and unintelligibility – can be unjust. Our communicative practises extend beyond merely sharing information; we also share and contest which questions are worth answering\, which answers suffice\, what parts of our shared body of information matter. This is a central aspect of our social epistemic practices. One way we do this is via perspectival communication in which what one communicates includes an interpretive stance or ‘way of looking’ at the world\, via frames like metaphor and narrative. In this paper\, I consider how perspectival communication may be wrongfully frustrated\, constituting an unjust communicative disablement. I analyse how perspectival communication can be distorted due to dominant ‘mis-interpretive’ resources. I specifically examine the way in which marginalised people’s testimony relating to their own experience of marginalisation\, may be misinterpreted in such a way as to justify and perpetuate that marginalisation thereby ‘backfiring’. Moreover\, I highlight that attempts to counter hermeneutical injustice are especially vulnerable to this form of communicative disablement.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Grounding Gender in Gender Identity \nAbstract: Contra recent proposals\, for instance by Dembroff (2018) and Jenkins (2023)\, I’ll argue for the Real Gender assumption\, namely for its implication that the reason why one should classify trans people as the gender they identify with is that they are the gender they identify with\, in all contexts. I will argue for this claim by arguing in favour of a “gender-identity first” account of gender (Cosker-Rowland\, 2023). Finally\, I will argue that we should classify people according to the gender they identify with\, regardless of whether the operative gender kinds (Dembroff\, 2018) are just or unjust.
