SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Richard Pettigrew (Bristol) "Paul meets Buchak: how transformative experiences raise problems for risk-sensitive rational choice"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In Transformative Experience\, L. A. Paul issues traditional decision theory with a challenge: when some of the options you might choose might lead you to have a transformative experience\, whether epistemic or personal\, decision theory cannot represent your choice and cannot govern how you should make it. In Choosing for Changing Selves\, I argued that expected utility theory can meet that challenge. But now I think expected utility theory isn’t the correct theory of rational choice—rather\, it’s something close to risk-weighted expected utility theory\, which is spelled out and defended by Lara Buchak in Risk and Rationality. Since that theory is more permissive than expected utility theory\, you might expect that the solutions to Paul’s puzzles that I proposed on behalf of the latter will carry over. But\, as I will argue in this talk\, the opposite is true. The possibility of transformative experiences poses substantial problems for those of us who wish to incorporate risk into rational choice.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes: Mona Simion (Glasgow) "Knowledge and Disinformation"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This paper develops a full account of the nature of disinformation as ignorance-generating content. The view\, if correct\, carries high stakes upshots\, both theoretically and practically. First\, it challenges several widely spread theoretical assumptions about disinformation – such as that it is a species of information\, a species of misinformation\, essentially false or misleading\, essentially intended/aimed/having the function of generating false beliefs in/misleading hearers. Secondly\, it shows that the challenges faced by disinformation tracking in practice go well beyond mere fact checking.

SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar Gillian Russell (Australian Catholic University and University of St Andrews)
DESCRIPTION:Title:  Rethinking Logical Consequence \nAbstract:  Etchemendy’s On the Concept of Logical Consequence (1999) distinguishes two ways of thinking about logical models. On the first (metaphysical) models represent different ways the world might be\, on the second (semantic) they represent different reinterpretations of the non-logical parts of the formal language. In this paper I argue for a third view\, on which models represent different Combinations of language with the world (a kind of hybrid of the metaphysical and semantic views) and show how to use this approach to characterise a novel conception of informal logical consequence.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Shimpei Endo (Sydney) "Truthmaker Semantics for Epistemicism 2"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  \nWhen you talk about vagueness\, you often talk about truth. Most views on vagueness and the related paradox of the sorites say something about truth. Degreeists\, for example\, propose that truth is not limited to two values but can take on many values. The connection between vagueness and truth is clear\, but what about the connection to truth’s source\, also known as truthmakers? Yes\, at least for Roy Sorensen\, who uses this connection to support his version of epistemicism. According to Sorensen’s truthmaker gap epistemicism\, borderline cases are true but ungrounded: they are true\, but there is no truthmaker at all. \nMark Jago has criticized Sorensen’s approach for its lack of consideration for higher-order vagueness. This is a significant limitation because explaining higher-order vagueness is one of the strengths of epistemicism. In fact\, Timothy Williamson’s popular and influential variant of epistemicism counts it as one of the reasons to adopt this view. \nThis paper proposes a better approach to using truthmakers for epistemicism in the vagueness debate. Specifically\, it presents a truthmaker semantics based on Williamson’s margin for error principle and demonstrates that the resulting semantics satisfies its needs (i.e.\, capturing higher-order vagueness and cancelling the problematic DD=KK principle). \n

SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar Matteo Nizzardo (University of St. Andrews) and Nuno Maia (University of Oxford)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Identity and Extensionality in Boffa Set Theory \nAbstract: Boffa non-well-founded set theory allows for several distinct sets equal to their respective singletons\, the so-called ‘Quine atoms’. Rieger (2000) contends that this theory cannot be a faithful description of set-theoretic reality. He argues that\, even after granting that there are non-well-founded sets\, ‘the extensional nature of sets’ precludes numerically distinct Quine atoms. Here we identify important similarities between Rieger’s argument\, on one hand\, and how non-rigid structures are conceived within mathematical structuralism\, on the other. We argue that this opens the way for an objection against Rieger\, whilst affording the theoretical resources for the start of a defence of Boffa set theory as a faithful description of set-theoretic reality.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Jessica Brown (St Andrews) "Dogmatism: individuals\, corporations and governments"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Just as individuals believe things\, so do groups. We routinely ascribe beliefs to groups such as corporations and governments claiming\, say\, that the government knows that there is a cost of living crisis or that a corporation knows that inflation is rising. We use such attributions to both predict the behaviour of groups ahead of time\, as well as to evaluate them after the fact. Of particular interest are cases in which groups persist in dogmatically believing against the evidence. Thus\, a government might dogmatically believe against the evidence that its climate change provisions are adequate\, and a detective team might dogmatically believe against the evidence that a local gangster is responsible for a recent murder. My project here is to think about what it is for a group to dogmatically believe against the evidence\, which in turn raises questions about the nature of group evidence. I will tentatively argue that considering group dogmatic belief provides reasons to reject “summative” accounts of group evidence on which a group’s evidence is a function of the evidence of its members in favour of “non-summative” accounts of group evidence which allow a group’s evidence to float freely from the evidence of its members.

However\, contrary to what this statement might suggest\, isolating the tenets of the analytic method is no easy task. In effect\, although it is commonly claimed that one of the hallmarks of analytic philosophers is their commitment to clarity\, the very notion of analysis appears to be surrounded by an impenetrable veil of obscurity. \nThe term ‘analysis’ seems in fact to refer to a multitude of techniques as diverse as the theoretical tools they deploy. This terminological confusion—in itself unproblematic—is nonetheless symptomatic of a more serious state of methodological fuzziness. Can different forms of analysis yield conflicting results? If so\, which results should we accept\, and which should we reject? \nAs things stand\, questions like these have not yet been fully explored. Yet\, such questions are all the more relevant in a metaphilosophical landscape dominated by the emergence of new approaches to philosophical enquiry that profess to be averse to the use of analysis (Conceptual Engineering is an eminent example). \nThis state of affairs makes it imperative to understand what the method of analysis really is\, was\, and could be. The present Arché workshop aims to extensively explore this topic by bringing together distinguished scholars whose work has contributed to shedding light on the philosophical value of analysis (or lack thereof) and on the role of this methodology in the development of Analytic Philosophy. \nWORKSHOP PROGRAMME: \nDay 1 (26 May): \n\n(9:30 – 10:30) Timothy Williamson \n\n\n\n\n5 mins. break\n\n\n\n\n(10:35 – 11:05) Q&A\n\n\n\n\n15 mins. break\n\n\n\n\n(11:20 – 12:20) Catarina Dutilh Novaes (online)\n\n\n\n\n5 mins. break\n\n\n\n\n(12:25 – 12:55) Q&A\n\n\n\n\nLunch break\n\n\n\n\n(14:30 – 15:30) Jade Fletcher \n\n\n\n\n5 mins. break \n\n\n\n\n(15:35 – 16:05) Q&A\n\n\n\n\n15 mins. break \n\n\n\n\n(16:20 – 17:20) Michael Potter\n\n\n\n\n5 mins. break\n\n\n(17:25 – 17:55) Q&A\n\n  \nDay 2 (27 May): \n\n(9:30 – 10:30) Patricia Blanchette\n\n\n\n\n5 mins. break\n\n\n\n\n(10:35 – 11:05) Q&A\n\n\n\n\n15 mins break\n\n\n\n\n(11:20 – 12:20) Peter Sullivan\n\n\n\n\n5 mins. break\n\n\n\n\n(12:25 – 12:55) Q&A\n\n\n\n\nLunch break\n\n\n\n\n(14:30 – 15:30) Luca Alberto Rappuoli \n\n\n\n\n5 mins. break \n\n\n\n\n(15:35 – 16:05) Q&A\n\n\n\n\n15 mins. break \n\n\n\n\n(16:20 – 17:20) Giuseppina D’Oro\n\n\n\n\n5 mins. break\n\n\n(17:25 – 17:55) Q&A\n\n  \nSPONSORS: Analysis Trust\, British Society or the History of Philosophy\, Mind Association\, Scots Philosophical Association\, Aristotelian Society. \nWebsite: https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/arche/event/workshop-on-analysis/ \nPhilEvents: https://philevents.org/event/show/110237
