SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar Justin Clarke Doane (Columbia University)
DESCRIPTION:Title: What is Logical Monism? \nAbstract: \nLogical monism is the view that there is ‘One True Logic’. This is the default position\, against which pluralists react. If there were not ‘One True Logic’\, it is hard to see how there could be one true theory of anything.  A theory is closed under a logic!  But what is logical monism? In this article\, I consider semantic\, logical\, modal\, scientific\, and metaphysical proposals. I argue that\, on no ‘factualist’ analysis (according to which ‘there is One True Logic’ expresses a factual claim\, rather than an attitude like approval)\, does the doctrine have both metaphysical and methodological import. Metaphysically\, logics abound. Methodologically\, what to infer from what is not settled by the facts\, even the normative ones. I conclude that the only interesting sense in which there could be One True Logic is noncognitive. The same may be true of monism about normative areas\, like moral\, epistemic\, and prudential ones\, generally.

SUMMARY:Language and Mind Seminar: Ryan Miller (University of Geneva) Lexical Negotiators
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Nearly every aspect of words is subject to alteration: pronunciation\, spelling\, part of speech\, and definition. These aspects are often altered intentionally\, yet speakers can err in each of them when using words. Using the semantics of ‘equality’ and ‘equity’ as an example\, this paper resolves the puzzle by suggesting that such alterations are negotiated between speaker and audience\, and introduces a formal framework from financial theory governing those negotiations. The model suggests that successful lexical negotiations are constrained by transaction costs\, which implies that some conceptual engineering projects (like Haslanger’s revision of the word ‘woman’) are likely to fail even though the semantic revision of ‘equality’ and ‘equity’ was largely successful.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Catherine Elgin (Harvard) (co-hosted with CEPPA) "Epistemic Dynamics"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Epistemic agents are finite and fallible. Our range is limited and some of what we accept is\, no doubt\, flawed. To achieve our epistemic and practical objectives\, we devise methods and practices that foster correction\, refinement\, and expansion of our current epistemic commitments. Traditional epistemology maintains that epistemic acceptability requires non-fortuitously justified true belief\, where non-fortuitousness insures that the justification and the truth maker align. If so\, reflective equilibrium is at best indicative of acceptability. I argue otherwise. Reflective equilibrium is constitutive of epistemic acceptability. Because a network of cognitive commitments in reflective equilibrium is as reasonable as any available alternative in the epistemic circumstances\, it is worthy of acceptance. That does not make it perfect or permanently acceptable. Such a network is susceptible of and probably in need of improvement. But it is the best we can currently do and provides a suitable platform for improvement. I argue that such a network should be designed to foster\, not merely to allow for\, further gains. It should support epistemic leveraging. That requires that it enable critical reflection about its own ends and means\, enabling epistemic agents to recognize opportunities for and obstacles to improvement.

SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar Franz Berto (University of St. Andrews and University of Amsterdam)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Hyperintensionality\, Overfitting\, and the Descriptive-Prescriptive Dilemma \nAbstract: \nA hyperintensional epistemic logic would take the contents which can be known or believed as more fine-grained than sets of possible worlds. I rebut two objections to the very idea: the Descriptive-Prescriptive Dilemma and Williamson’s Objection from Overfitting. I propose a hyperintensional account of propositions as sets of worlds enriched with topics: what those propositions\, and so the attitudes towards them\, are about. I show that the account captures robust intuitions of same-saying; that it can be pervasively applied in formal and mainstream epistemology; and that it is left unscathed by both objections.

SUMMARY:Language and Mind Seminar | Stephano Pugnaghi "What it takes to introduce a proper name!"
DESCRIPTION:The literature on proper names has grown considerably in the past decades\, with the formulation of a wide variety of new ways to analyse these expressions both semantically and metasemantically. Many in the literature have attempted to solve the problems of the classical views of naming by advancing new kinds of semantic accounts of these expressions. In contrast with these approaches\, my aim in this talk is to maintain a broadly classical referentialist semantic analysis of naming expressions (roughly inspired by the considerations in Naming and Necessity) and to attempt to solve some of the problems advanced in the literature by presenting a new metasemantic picture of names. As such\, in this talk I will present and clarify a partially revised notion of names’ Introduction\, focusing particularly on the necessary and sufficient conditions an act of introduction for a name must satisfy in order to be successful. The account presented will importantly diverge from some of the traditional metasemantic theories\, giving centrality to the notion of conceivability and relying on speakers’ referential intentions.

SUMMARY:Masterclass on Synthetic Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:Three-session masterclass delivered online by Arché Professorial Fellow Catarina Dutilh Novaes\, via Teams and in Edgecliffe\, Room G03 on (UK time zone): \nApril 12 10:30am-12noon   \nApril 19 10:30am-12noon   \nApril 26 10:30am-12noon   \nThis 3-session masterclass will introduce an approach in philosophy that is now known as ‘synthetic philosophy’: “the enterprise of bringing together insights\, knowledge\, and arguments from the special sciences with the aim to offer a theoretically (reasonably) unified\, coherent account of complex systems and connect these to a wider culture or other philosophical projects (or both).” (Schliesser\, 2019) It is related to\, but interestingly different from\, naturalism in philosophy and empirically-informed philosophy. Current practitioners of synthetic philosophy include Daniel Dennett\, Kim Sterelny and Peter Godfrey-Smith. With the growing fragmentation of scientific knowledge into hyperspecialized disciplines\, there is much need for over-arching\, comprehensive perspectives that provide unified accounts of complex phenomena drawing on various disciplines\, and philosophy is arguably ideally placed for this purpose. \nSession 1: What is synthetic philosophy?   \nGeneral presentation\, historical precedents\, contrast with other styles of philosophy. \nSession 2: The dialogical roots of deduction as an example of synthetic philosophy  \nPresentation of the book The Dialogical Roots of Deduction as a project of synthetic philosophy. \nSession 3: How to design a synthetic philosophy research program  \nPractical discussion of how to design and carry out a research program\, focusing on methodological considerations. \nThis masterclass is open to non-St Andrews research postgrads as well – for info and the link to the online meeting\, e-mail Viviane Fairbank vf45@st-andrews.ac.uk.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Daniel Garibay Garcia (St Andrews) "Group Lies: From Group Speech Acts Inflationism to Group Mental States Inflationism"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this work\, I’m interested in the relations between accounts of group speech acts and accounts of group mental states. Lackey (2021) argues in favour of group assertion inflationism\, which is the thesis that groups can assert even if no member of the group asserts. But she rejected group belief inflationism\, the thesis that a group can believe that P even if no member believes that P. In this work\, I argue that group intention and belief inflationism follows from group assertion inflationism. In short\, I argue that groups can delegate a lot of their functions\, so it is possible for groups to lie even if none of its members believes that ¬P or intends to deceive about P. Most extensions of lies accounts would require groups to have some mental state about P. Putting these together presents a problem for deflationary accounts of group intention and belief.

SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar Ryan Miller (University of Geneva)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Lonergan’s Oddly Strong Theory of Emergence \nAbstract: \nJessica Wilson (2021) offers three characterizations of strong emergence: (1) heuristically\, when higher-level features cannot in-principle be deduced from lower-level features\, (2) the rejection of Physical Causal Closure in the emergence hexalemma\, and (3) when a higher-level feature depends on lower-level features but has a novel power. I explicate Bernard Lonergan (1992 [1957])’s account of emergence to argue that these three characterizations come apart. Lonergan’s account is only weak emergence according to (1)\, and affirms Physical Causal Closure by denying adjunct premises rather than any of the assumptions of the emergence hexalemma\, yet counts as strong emergence according to (3).

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Bart Streumer (Groningen) (with CEPPA) "Superspreading the Word"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Quasi-realists are expressivists who say much of what realists say. To avoid making their view indistinguishable from realism\, however\, they usually stop short of saying everything realists say. Many realists therefore think that something important is missing from quasi-realism. I will argue that quasi-realists can undermine this thought by defending a version of quasi-realism that I will call super-quasi-realism. This version seems indistinguishable from realism\, but I will argue that this is a mistaken impression that arises because we cannot believe super-quasi-realism.

SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar Daniel Hoek (Virginia Tech)
DESCRIPTION:Title: The Reality of Rainbows: Loose Talk and Ontology \nAbstract: To be\, not to be\, or to loosely be? For this talk\, we will venture into the murky shadowlands of ontology to explore the third option. Picking up a thread from Yablo’s (1998) remarks on ontology\, I’ll suggest that\, due to the ubiquity of loose talk\, things that don’t really exist can still play load-bearing roles in our description of the world. If this really is loose talk at work\, then it should be possible to draw some connections between the pragmatics of loose talk and ontology. That’s what I’ll try to do\, bringing the logic of loose talk to bear on issues of Realism vs. Anti-Realism. As a concrete case study\, I’ll ask whether or not rainbows are real.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Anne Meylan (Zurich) "Inquiry and the Diachronic Reasons to Believe"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThe formation of cognitive attitudes (beliefs/suspensions of beliefs\, etc.) seems to be governed by two distinct kinds of norms. On the one hand\, there are the “classical epistemic norms”. An example of this first type: believe that p only if you have sufficient reason to believe that p. On the other hand\, there are norms that tell us what should be the case of the investigation that leads to our having these attitudes. For example\, don’t investigate about p if you know that p. Or to take a much-discussed example (Friedman 2020\, 503): if one wants to figure out Q\, then one ought to take the necessary means to figuring out Q. One of the questions that seriously troubles epistemologists is how to account for the relationship that the former “classical epistemic norms” hold with the latter “inquiry norms”\, also called “zetetic norms”. \nIn this article I would like to show that these two kinds of norms are not\, contrary to what Friedman (2022) thinks\, incompatible\, that is\, that they do not give rise to contradictory injunctions. It is simply that the epistemic norm is a synchronic norm\, whereas the zetetic norms are diachronic. If this is true\, there is no longer any reason to worry about their cohabitation.
