SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Jules Holroyd (Sheffield) (co-hosted with CEPPA) "Proleptic Praise"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: What is praise? I argue that we can make progress by examining what praise does. Functionalist views of praise are emerging\, but I here argue that by foregrounding cases in which expressions of praise are rejected by their direct target\, we see that praise has a wider\, and largely neglected\, social function. First I introduce cases in which praise is rejected. Then\, I identify a series of desiderata for an analysis of praise by bringing these cases into contact with existing views about what praise is and does. Finally I develop a functionalist account and show how it can meet these desiderata. In outline\, my claim is that one key function of praise is to exert social pressure by bestowing esteem. I tease out some mechanisms via which praise exerts social pressure\, and is particularly difficult to challenge. This analysis is responsive to\, and places at the foreground of our analysis\, the possibility that praise can be used for bad and oppressive ends.

SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar Frederik Andersen (University of St. Andrews)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Modeling Deep Disagreement in Default Logic  \nAbstract: \nDefault logic has been a very active research topic in artificial intelligence since the early 1980s\, but has not received as much attention in the philosophical literature thus far. This paper shows one way in which the technical tools of artificial intelligence can be applied in contemporary epistemology by modeling a paradigmatic case of deep disagreement using default logic. In §1 model-building viewed as a kind of philosophical progress is briefly motivated\, while §2 introduces the case of deep disagreement we aim to model. On the heels of this\, §3 defines our formal framework\, viz.\, a refined Horty-style default logic. §4 then uses the framework to model deep disagreement\, and finally §5 provides a critical discussion of the result.

SUMMARY:Language and Mind Seminar | Frank Sode (Goethe University Frankfurt) "On counterfactuality in counterfactuals and desire reports"
DESCRIPTION:The question I’m going to address in this talk is: Is there a deeper connection between the rules of use associated with (utterances of) counterfactuals and the rules of use associated with reports of counterfactual desires? Heim (1992) proposes a semantics for desire reports that suggests that the answer is: yes. Her proposal is based on the idea that “there is a hidden conditional in every desire report”\, an idea she traces back to Stalnaker (1984). In the first part of the talk\, I present a decompositional account of Heim’s proposal that reduces the rules of use associated with reports of counterfactual desires to the rules of use of counterfactuals and standard assumptions about the projection of presuppositions under attitudes. In the second part of the talk\, I present cross- linguistic data\, mainly based on von Fintel & Iatridou (2022) and my own work\, that show that in many languges there is a close grammatical connection between counterfactuals and reports of counterfactual desires. I argue that Heim’s conceptual idea if taken quite literally as an idea about the grammar of desire reports is the most promissing candidate to date in explaining the cross-linguistic facts. The surprising harmony between Heim’s conceptual idea and the empirical facts suggests that there may be an important lesson to be learned from grammar about the notional category of counterfactual desires.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Katharina Bernhard (St Andrews) "Permissivism and Inductive Risk"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Proponents of inductive risk make three claims: (1) When accepting or not-accepting a hypothesis\, a scientist qua scientist must weigh the risks of error. (2) In weighing the risks of error\, a scientist must resort to non-epistemic utilities. (3) Epistemically\, these (non-epistemic) utilities ought to merely play an indirect role.To make sense of (1)-(3)\, I will draw on recent discussions in epistemic utility theory concerning epistemic risk and Permissivism. Presupposing a Lockean Thesis\, epistemic risk requires us to make a decision as to whether to believe\, (suspend judgement on\,) or disbelieve a proposition in light of the risks of error. These risks of error can be of two kinds: believing a false proposition or not believing a true one. I will introduce three types of Permissivism within this epistemic risk framework that look particularly promising as a model for inductive risk. The first concerns the permissiveness of different decision rules (risk inclined\, risk neutral\, risk averse) while the other two types “encode” Permissivism in the epistemic utilities (how much one disvalues one type of error over the other). \nI will ultimately dismiss the decision-rule type of Permissivism as a suitable model of inductive risk\, and argue that the remaining two types of Permissivism both are attractive options for the proponent of inductive risk to endorse.

SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar Franz Berto (University of St. Andrews and University of Amsterdam)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Imaging and Imagining \nAbstract: \nI investigate the workings and epistemic credentials of counterfactual imagination: the activity of supposing that P in order to investigate what would be the case if P was the case. The mainstream way of drawing the distinction between imagination in the indicative and in the subjunctive or counterfactual mood has it that one can only suppose that P in the former way when one gives nonzero chance to P. I argue that that’s wrong. Instead\, both kinds of suppositional thinking work by simulated belief revision; but while the former is governed by Bayesian conditionalization\, the latter is governed by Lewisian imaging. So understood\, counterfactual imagination can be rationally justified by considerations concerning belief accuracy: a specific kind of imaging\, namely Laplacian generalized imaging\, minimizes expected inaccuracy as measured by the Brier score. So if one endorses the claims that (expected) accuracy is the fundamental virtue of epistemic attitudes\, and that accuracy is adequately measured by the Brier score\, imagining via imaging is virtuous indeed.

SUMMARY:Language and Mind Seminar | Lixiao Lin "Self-location\, other-location\, and impossible world"
DESCRIPTION:Self-locating (or de se\, first-person) attitudes (e.g. the belief that I am great) and other-locating (or de re) attitudes (e.g. the hope that that person is awesome) raise problems for theories of propositions. In this talk\, I develop an impossible-world theory of self-locating and other-locating attitudes\, according to which the propositional contents of the two types of attitudes can be fully characterised in terms of impossible-world propositions (i.e. propositions that are sets of possible and impossible worlds). I will argue that my impossible-world theory is preferable to the standard centred-world theory.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Francisca Silva (St Andrews) "Full and Partial Grasp on a Subject Matter"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:Extant accounts of subject matter all assume that an agent either fully grasps or does not grasp a given subject matter. Although useful\, this idealization also comes with limitations\, and like theories spelled out in terms of full belief can be enriched when modified to account for credences\, so can theories spelled out in terms of full grasp on a subject matter be enriched when modified to account for degrees of grasp on a subject matter. \nIn this talk I’ll start by presenting an intuitive and formal understanding of what it is to have a partial grasp on a subject matter and how it differs from having more or less information on it\, both notions which I cash out in terms of answers to a question under discussion. I then show with examples how agents having a partial grasp on a subject matter can come about from cases such as those involving limited conceptual resources\, limited information\, and personal biases and patterns of discrimination in one’s social environment. Having done that\, I consider how the notions of a partial grasp and partial information on a subject matter interact with each other and with Yablo’s (2014) notion of content inclusion. Finally\, I motivate the need for a better understanding of a partial grasp on a subject matter by showing how a common occurrence – conflating two different topics or questions – can only be understood once partial grasp is accommodated.
