SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar Andrew Tedder (Ruhr University Bochum)
DESCRIPTION:Title: An Algebraic View of the Mares-Goldblatt Semantics  \nAbstract: Mares and Goldblatt (2006) introduced a frame-based semantics for quantified extensions of relevant logics\, which are generally incomplete with respect to frame-based models employing the standard Tarskian/Kripkean machinery familiar from quantified modal and intuitionistic logic. In this talk\, I’ll be presenting an algebraic generalisation of the original Mares-Goldblatt semantics by abstracting away from features of the frame semantics. The upshot is a more general structure which is aimed to facilitate comparison with other approaches to quantifiers in relevant and other non-classical logics.

SUMMARY:Language and Mind Seminar | Niccolò Aimone Pisano "An instrumentalist take on the models of the Free-Energy Principle"
DESCRIPTION:The Free-Energy Principle (FEP) has gained increasing popularity in the philosophy of the cognitive sciences. There is a number of versions of this theory\, but the core ideas remain stable: self-organising adaptive systems\, and cognitive systems in particular\, are to be conceived of as approximating optimal Bayesian inference\, and in doing so they manage to remain attuned to their environment\, thus staying alive. These accomplishments are achieved by minimising an information-theoretic quantity known as free energy\, which is used as a tractable proxy for another quantity\, namely surprise. Surprise is an information-theoretic notion closely related to entropy\, and by keeping it to a minimum\, living organisms\, and cognitive systems in particular\, manage to remain far from thermodynamical equilibrium while exchanging matter and energy with their environment. This is done by performing Bayesian inferences so as to anticipate the sensory inputs coming from the environment and to actively influence the environment itself through action\, thus selectively sampling it. \nIn my talk\, I will discuss how to interpret the status of the statistical models employed within FEP\, whether in a realist or an instrumentalist key. Drawing on some insights coming from the literature on scientific modelling\, I will elaborate an argument in favour of an instrumentalist interpretation of the use of statistical models in the context of this theory\, and I will examine the implications that this interpretation has if one intends to elaborate an account of cognition (a “mark of the cognitive”) based on FEP.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Lara Jost (St Andrews) "Patient Activation or Patient Exploitation?"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this talk\, I cast doubt over the benefits of a shift towards greater patient activation. Feminist medical ethics and recent studies about healthcare service utilisation highlight the importance of patients being active inquirers and autonomous agents. By improving their knowledge\, skills and confidence in managing their health\, patients secure better health outcomes and overcome medical paternalism. Contra this trend\, I propose to problematise some of these benefits by arguing that patient activation comes at a cost and can lead to the exploitation of patients. I argue that this is caused by the burdensome nature of the epistemic labour required from patients\, and subsequently by the unjust silencing that patients might endure after performing this epistemic labour.

SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar Francisca Silva (University of St. Andrews)
DESCRIPTION:Title: FDE worlds or inexact truthmaker semantics? \nAbstract: In this talk I will present models for what minimally rational agents know given what they know that meet several (as I shall claim) plausible desiderata for the knowledge states of non-ideal agents. These models can be given either in terms of a space of possible and impossible worlds that Berto and Jago (2019) call FDE worlds\, or in terms of a space of states satisfying a relation of inexact truthmaking\, when both are conjoined with a specific view of subject matters. As far as the semantics goes\, then\, the two approaches are in equally good standing. Should we prefer a talk of states and inexact truthmaking or of impossible worlds and worldly representation? The answer lies in the underlying metaphysics presupposed by both theoretical approaches. I conclude\, then\, by comparing the prospects of both approaches in terms of their metaphysical commitments.

SUMMARY:Language and Mind Seminar | Daniel Garibay García "Group Lies and Group Bullshit"
DESCRIPTION:Recently\, there has been renewed interest in collective phenomena. Social epistemology has the lead on this topic; but there is a lot left to say on the subject of collective speech. In this talk\, I’m interested in discussing the distinction between group lies and other kinds of deception committed by groups. In this work\, I present a case of group lies that is problematic for most group intention and belief accounts. The main idea is that individuals can lie about P on behalf of a group without the members of the group having any idea (mental state or attitude) about P. I call these external lies. If I’m right this would be not just a surprising result but also problematic data for most accounts of group belief and intention. Possible replies to my claim include modifying our accounts of lies and characterizing my case as a case of bullshiting. A debate about external lies may prove fruitful to discuss how to extend our theories of lies and distinctions between speech acts to the collective case\, and improve our general understanding of deception.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Winnie Ma (KCL) "Towards an Ethics of Belief for AI: with a Focus on AI Profiling and Algorithmic Discrimination"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Philosophical research in AI has hitherto largely focused on the ethics of AI. Here we suggest that the time has come to start a novel area of research in AI – the epistemology of AI\, and in particular the ethics of belief of AI. This paper is a collaboration between an ethicist of belief and a machine learning engineer (Dr. Vincent Valton) to investigate the ways in which extant work in the ethics of (human) belief can be applied to an ethics of AI belief\, and in exciting new topics of interest in the latter domain. The focus of today’s talk will be on the ethics of AI belief with respect to AI profiling beliefs and algorithmic discrimination. I here understand “profiling” as forming a belief about an individual on the basis of well-evidenced (by which I don’t mean morally justified) generalizations about a group or groups to which that individual belongs. And I understand “discrimination” as the differential treatment of an individual based on their membership in a particular group or groups. \n(Joint Work-in-Progress by Winnie Ma and Vincent Valton)

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Emilia Wilson (St Andrews) "Epistemic Corrosion and Informative Falsity"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this presentation\, I examine the how epistemic value of a piece of information can come apart from its accuracy and argue that this can be leveraged when implementing ameliorative projects. I first show that distortions in our interpretive schemas furnish us with correspondingly distorted interpretations\, giving rise to epistemic and communicative obstacles. In such cases\, even accurate information can worsen an agent’s epistemic position: I term this epistemic corrosion. In cases of epistemic corrosion\, accurate information is transformed into a misleading truth via the agents’ (distorting) interpretive process. Secondly\, I argue that\, in order to bypass the resulting epistemic and communicative obstacles\, we may leverage a particular kind of informative falsity. These are statements which are strictly false (as interpreted by the hearer) but which nevertheless advance the hearer’s overall understanding. I end by highlighting the potentially controversial significance of this proposal for attempts to implement ameliorative projects.

SUMMARY:Language and Mind Seminar | Justin D'Ambrosio "The Indeterminacy of Consciousness"
DESCRIPTION:Much recent work in the philosophy of consciousness has centered around the Determinacy thesis: the thesis that for each \, it is determinate whether  is conscious. Whether this thesis is true is a matter of considerable urgency\, for it is widely taken to entail the falsehood of both physicalism about consciousness and gradualism about its evolution. Here we offer a new argument against the determinacy thesis. We first argue that if consciousness is multidimensional\, the main argument in favour of determinacy—the No Borderline Case argument—is unsound. We then argue that multidimensionality makes it highly probable that Determinacy is false\, because multidimensionality brings with it a distinctive and heretofore unrecognized form of indeterminacy. We then offer arguments that consciousness is in fact multidimensional\, and accordingly\, that the drastic consequences of Determinacy should not concern us.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar: Rachel Fraser (Oxford) "Practical Assurance"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Suppose I intend to give up smoking\, having never tried to quit before. I know that 95 per cent of smokers fail to give up on the first attempt. Nonetheless\, I promise my partner: I will give up on the first attempt. Here\, I promise against the evidence. Such promises are puzzling. On the one hand\, it seems that such promises can be licit. On the other\, it seems that they must either be insincere or reckless. I consider various extant responses to the puzzle. They are inadequate: they cannot account for the capacity of such promises to yield knowledge in the promisee.

SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar Miriam Bowen (University of St. Andrews)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Indeterminacy and Rational Belief \nAbstract: \nThere are a variety of norms that purport to govern what attitude an agent ought to adopt. It is unclear\, however\, what attitude a rational agent ought to have towards an indeterminate proposition or whether there is a norm that prescribes an attitude. In this talk I address the normative question of what attitude a rational agent ought to adopt towards cases of indeterminacy. \nTo do so I defend the view that indeterminacy should be understood as an umbrella term that encompasses a range of related phenomena. In light of this I argue we should adopt a position I call modest pluralism to the normative question. Modest pluralism holds that there is no unique attitude an agent ought to adopt to cases of indeterminacy\, but rather a range of permissible attitudes to adopt. However\, I also argue that logical norms do underlie what attitudes it is rational for an agent to have in general and this provides a general constraint on the types of attitudes it is permissible for a rational agent to adopt towards cases of indeterminacy.
