SUMMARY:Language and Mind Seminar | Emilia Wilson "Mis-interpretive Resources"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Inadequacies in our interpretive resources are epistemically and communicatively disabling; in some cases\, these inadequacies can constitute (hermeneutic) injustice. Accounts of hermeneutic injustice have primarily centred on the absence of necessary resources; however\, critics have highlighted cases in which the problem is a resource we do possess (‘positive hermeneutic injustice’). In this talk I examine how access to an interpretive resource may be communicative and epistemically disabling. I begin by distinguishing two sorts of interpretive resource: constituents of representations and ‘scaffolds’ which enable us to grasp said representations. I show that scaffolding resources may enable us to grasp inaccurate representations of a target: I term these mis-interpretive resources. I then turn to consider how these mis-interpretive resources may be epistemically and communicatively disabling. Considering the role scaffolding resources enables us to explain how interpretive resources may ‘compete’\, meaning that a new resource may render agents less competent. Attending to scaffolding resources thus offers a richer understanding of positive hermeneutic injustice which explains details the original account fails to capture. Finally\, I note that mis-interpretive resources may give rise to particularly pernicious forms of disablement\, due to the apparent feeling of understanding they furnish one with.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar (Online): Sally Haslanger (MIT) "Ideology\, Culture\, and Social Meaning"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: My aim in this paper is to sketch a conception of ideology that draws on the critical theory tradition. This conception of ideology is a response to a particular challenge for those working on social justice: Why is it that most of us\, most of the time\, act in ways that perpetuate injustice? To begin to answer this question\, I will develop an account\, inspired by Althusser among others\, that embeds ideology in social practices. Social practices enable both human and non-human animals to coordinate fluently and flexibly in response to each other and our environment; and they depend on something like a “language” – a system of signs and signals – that makes socially intelligible agency possible. I call such a framework of meaning and its material apparatus a cultural technē. I go on to argue that Grice’s distinction between natural and non-natural meaning is too coarse to provide us an account of social meaning\, and drawing on Skyrms and others working on signals\, I propose that a cultural technē is a framework or system of signs. I then consider how we might capture the publicity of social meanings in terms that don’t require complex metacognition. I conclude that account of ideology as a cultural technē “gone wrong” provides us the basics of a critical account of ideology.

SUMMARY:Metaphysics and Logic Seminar Jann Paul Engler (University of St. Andrews)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Sheaves for Intuitionistic Logic \nAbstract: Somewhat simplified\, the ‘traditional’ intuitionistic conception of logic evaluates the judgement ‘that p’ not as “p is true” but as “p is verifiable” or “there is a proof of p”. This talk is concerned with finding an adequate formal semantical framework that reflects central aspects of the meaning of the logical constants under this conception. It has two parts. Based on historical writings and on systematic grounds\, I will first review a number of desiderata that such a semantical framework has to fulfil. I will then observe that none of the common semantics for intuitionistic logic manages to account for all of them. In the second part\, I will introduce a version of sheaf semantics for intuitionistic logic\, for which I argue that it does (if it works the way that I hope it does). This semantics differs in some respects from already known sheaf models. It is a bit more complex than the semantics that are more familiar to philosophers\, but it manages to integrate all the other formal approaches that I will discuss\, and each of its components also permits an intuitive understanding.

SUMMARY:Language and Mind Seminar | Victor Tamburini "Proximal intentions and the metasemantics of demonstratives"
DESCRIPTION:According to a family of views called intentionalism\, what object a demonstrative such as ‘this’ or ‘that’ refers to when uttered is at least partly determined by the speaker’s referential intentions. In order to save intentionalism from counterexamples\, some of its proponents contend that speakers have multiple referential intentions when uttering a demonstrative\, and that some of these intentions prevail over the others to determine reference. Here I focus on one popular development of this response\, which I call ‘proximal intentions intentionalism’ – PI intentionalism for short. According to PI intentionalism\, the speaker’s proximal intentions – as opposed to her distal intentions – determine the reference of demonstratives. The aim of this talk is to assess PI intentionalism\, and from this assessment to draw broader conclusions about theories of reference-determination for demonstratives.

SUMMARY:Feminist Philosophy and Social Theory Seminar: Robert Chapman "Marx and Mental Health: Alienation in a Post-Fordist era"
DESCRIPTION:Title: Marx and Mental Health: Alienation in a Post-Fordist era  \nAbstract: In this talk I focus on experiences of mental illness and disablement in a post-Fordist era\, with an emphasis on this era’s heavy reliance on cognitive and emotional labour. My interest lies in how Marxian conceptions of alienation can clarify how these cognitive and emotional demands shape increasingly widespread experiences of mental illness and disability. I begin by considering some existing Marxian accounts of mental illness which suggest current experience is largely determined by marketing from pharmaceutical companies. I argue such accounts are overly reductionistic and mainly function to erase vital aspects of the reality of mental illness and disablement. I then draw on the concept of alienation to help propose an alternative account that helps make sense of experiences of both mental illness as something one “has” and neurodivergent as something one “is”. I clarify this difference as depending – in significant part – on different material and social relations and thus different forms of alienation. Finally\, I synthesise the two issues I highlight by proposing that our current phase of capitalism traps each of us in a cognitive-emotional double bind\, between alienation on the one hand and disablement on the other. Under these conditions most of us become ill or disabled\, and few of us are able to thrive. \nThis seminar will take place entirely online\, via Teams. Please email Sebastian at sasb1@st-andrews.ac.uk for a link to the meeting.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Current Themes Seminar (Online): Liz Jackson (Toronto) "How to Be (And How Not to Be) An Impurist"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Evidentialism is the view that evidence alone determines rational belief. Recently\, several rivals to evidentialism have been defended\, including pragmatic and moral encroachment\, epistemic partiality\, and practical and moral reasons for belief. Call these rivals “impurist” views. While impuirst views have both compelling cases and interesting arguments in their favor\, they also face a number of serious challenges. In this paper\, I explain three of the most important challenges to impurism. Then I argue that\, by embracing epistemic permissivism\, impurists can hold onto what’s central to their views while dealing with all three of these challenges. Finally\, I suggest that the evidentialist should also embrace permissivism\, as it helps them better respond to the most compelling considerations in favor of impurism.
