SUMMARY:Metaphysics Seminar Elke Brendel (University of Bonn) and Filippo Ferrari (University of Bonn)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Disagreeing and Agreeing in Logic \nAbstract: The aim of the talk is to give an account of disagreement and agreement in\nlogic in terms of rules of acceptance\, rejection\, and suspension of\njudgement. We thereby take acceptance\, rejection\, and suspension in logic to\nbe doxastic attitudes resulting from\, respectively\, assenting\, dissenting\,\nor refraining from assenting and dissenting to arguments or propositions in\nlight of their logical validity/invalidity. We will characterize the notion\nof disagreement between advocates of different logics as doxastic\nnoncotenability\, and agreement in logic as a certain kind of doxastic\ncotenability.\nWe will apply these notions of disagreement and agreement to\ndisagreements/agreements between advocates of three different logical\nsystems: classical logic\, the paracomplete logic K3\, and the paraconsistent\nlogic LP. In particular\, we will discuss which doxastic attitudes those\nlogicians ought to have with regard to liar propositions.\nIn the last part of the talk\, we will investigate in what sense a\ndisagreement in logic can be understood as a genuine form of disagreement.

SUMMARY:Language & Mind Seminar: Jean Gové
DESCRIPTION:Skillful Users and their Totems: An Account of Acquaintance in VR \nIn commenting on whether perception in VR is illusory or not\, Chalmers (2022) states that “[e]xpert users don’t suffer from the illusion that virtual objects are in the physical space in front of them; instead\, they experience the virtual objects as being in a virtual space…”. Two questions seem to arise from Chalmers’ articulation. Firstly\, why is it the case that expert VR users succeed in becoming acquainted with the virtual objects\, and non-experts do not? \nI seek to resolve this by presenting an account\, which – building on Evans – argues that expert VR users succeed in discriminating and identifying virtual objects\, and thus succeed in becoming acquainted with them\, due to their respective skill. This skill involves expert users’ knowing how to track and act upon objects in their virtual space\, analogous to Evans’ notion of egocentric space. \nYet this leads us to the second question; are expert users infallible in their judgement of virtual objects (and in never ‘falling prey’ to the illusion of VR)? I argue in the negative. As VR technology becomes more ‘life-like’\, even highly skilled users might find it hard to tell the difference between the virtual and the non-virtual. A way out of this\, I suggest\, is for VR users to have their own Inception-like ‘totem’ in order to aid them in discerning.

SUMMARY:Feminist Philosophy and Social Theory Seminar: Luvell Anderson (Syracuse) "Notorious Thugs"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: For some the idea that ‘thug’ carries racist connotations nowadays might come as a shock. They contend the word is just a way of referring to vicious criminals\, illustrated by its application against individuals of various racial backgrounds. According to Judy Muller\, ‘thug’ is simply a race-neutral term that should not be lost to political correctness run amok. In what follows I show that despite many people’s assumption that ‘thug’ lacks racist connotations it does have them. I show this by pointing to the long history of associating Blackness with criminality. However\, as with other slurs\, ‘thug’ can be appropriated. I’ll argue that we should see appropriation as a form of resistance.
