SUMMARY:Feminist Philosophy and Social Theory Seminar: Francisca Silva\, "Questions and Gender Questioning"
DESCRIPTION:This week’s seminar will be a talk by Francisca Silva titled “Questions and Gender Questioning”. It will be a hybrid seminar and you can attend either in person\, at Castlecliffe Seminar Room G5W\, or online\, via Teams. For further information or details to join the online meeting\, please email arche-fem-soc[at]st-andrews.ac.uk. \nTitle: Questions and gender questioning \nAbstract: Mainly since the work of Belnap and Steel (1976)\, a growing tradition in metaphysics and formal semantics has modelled questions as their respective direct complete answers. I will highlight how this way of modelling questions can help shed light on a significant process for trans people – that of questioning one’s own gender identity. Namely\, the framework emphasises how the act of asking questions highlights certain features of reality while obscuring others and therefore makes it clear how the way agents understand reality also depends on what questions they try to give answers to. After presenting the general theoretical framework and introducing a novel notion of a full and partial grasp on a question\, I will proceed to consider the range of questions that might be involved in gender questioning\, as well as various factors that might impose a limit on the range of possibilities agents are responsive to when considering such questions. To make the discussion more manageable\, I will focus on the particular experience of questioning trans women who report not being able to determine whether their experiences motivate a positive answer to the question “Am I a woman?” or merely to the question “Do I want to be a woman?”. I conclude by showing how such experiences arise as the two questions become conflated\, as well as by drawing some normative consequences from what is a presently unjust state of affairs affecting trans people more broadly.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Seminar: Petronella Randell (St Andrews) "The dilemma of transformative decision-making" [Hybrid]
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Transformative decisions are almost always framed as a problem for decision theory. However\, it seems that the problem has no real bite when presented in this way – there are many ways it can be avoided\, and most don’t incur significant costs. For example\, the problem only arises on a specific (nonstandard) conception of decision theory\, and even then\, it only then becomes a problem if we accept the requirement that outcomes must be evaluated from the subjective perspective. I think transformative decisions are misconstrued as a problem for decision theory. Paul’s argument is (or should be) that transformative decisions can be made rationally\, but only at the cost of authenticity. The problem of transformative experience is more accurately described as a dilemma between rationality and authenticity. Currently\, the dilemma is under-explored and ill-motivated. I will argue that a conflict between authenticity and rationality in transformative decision-making arises when we take the commitments that transformative decisions involve seriously. \nHybrid talk. SUMMARY:Metaphysics Seminar Koji Tanaka (Australian National University)
DESCRIPTION:Title: An Empirical and Normative Argument for Paraconsistency \nAbstract: \nGraham Priest has presented various arguments for paraconsistent logic. One line of argument is based on the alleged discrepancy between the principles of classical logic\, in particular\, ex contradictione quodlibet (A\, ¬A ⊨ B for any A and B) and how we rationally reason. As such an argument requires a broadly empirical methodology\, I call it an empirical argument for paraconsistent logic. Florian Steinberger has challenged this line of argument by claiming that it relies on the assumption that logic is normative and that no normative argument can be given in support of paraconsistent logic. In this paper\, I will examine Steinberger’s challenge and argue that the challenge consists of problematic assumptions. I will\, thus\, defend Priest’s empirical and normative argument for paraconsistent logic.

SUMMARY:Conceptual Engineering Seminar: Catherine Herfeld (Zurich) “Thick Concepts in Economics”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this talk\, we examine the viability of avoiding value judgements encoded in thick concepts when such thick concepts are used in economic theories. Thick concepts have an evaluative and a descriptive component. We focus on what implications the use of such thick concepts might have for the tenability of the fact/value dichotomy in economics. Our suggestion is that despite attempts to rid thick concepts of their evaluative component\, economists are often not successful. To support this suggestion\, we focus on the strategy of explication to remove the evaluative component of thick concepts and argue that often economists either have to make value judgments or are unable to individuate out the phenomenon under analysis. We support our claim with a case study\, namely the concept of addiction in Gary Becker and Kevin Murphy’s Theory of Rational Addiction (1988). One consequence of this analysis is that theories containing thick concepts could commit the economists to making value judgements and as such undermine the fact/value dichotomy.

SUMMARY:Feminist Philosophy and Social Theory Seminar: Quill R Kukla
DESCRIPTION:Title: “Public Artifacts and Collective Material Testimony”\n\n\nAbstract: Some features of the built public landscape\, like monuments\, memorials\, murals\, plazas\, arches\, and the like\, can be testimony. More specifically\, some of them can provide what I call collective material testimony – that is\, they serve as the testimony of a collective or group. I explore the nature of this testimony\, asking who its speaker is\, who it speaks to\, and what it says. I then argue that this testimony is often especially compelling\, in the sense that it is especially likely to transmit belief.  But\, I claim\, it is also especially untrustworthy\, both in the sense that its content is often false and in the sense that it is misleading as to its speaker and the grounds of its authority. Because it is both compelling and untrustworthy\, it is epistemically risky.I end by briefly considering what might make it more trustworthy and how we as epistemic agents can read our landscapes responsibly. \n  \n\n\n\nThis seminar will take place 4-6 pm June 8th in a hybrid format. SUMMARY:Epistemology Seminar: Silvia De Toffoli (Princeton) "Mathematical Justification – Motivations for a Fallibilist Account"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: According to a widely held view in the philosophy of mathematics\, direct inferential justification for mathematical propositions (that are not axioms) requires proof. I challenge this view. I argue that certain fallacious mathematical arguments considered by the relevant subjects to be correct can confer mathematical justification. But mathematical justification doesn’t come for cheap: not just any argument will do. I suggest that\, in order to be successful in transmitting justification\, an argument must satisfy specific standards\, some of which are social. The picture I delineate is a hybrid form of phenomenal conservatism. Although in this talk I focus on mathematical inferential beliefs\, the view on offer generalizes straightforwardly to other inferential beliefs.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Seminar: Brian Hedden (ANU) [Hybrid] "Counterfactual Decision Theory"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: I defend counterfactual decision theory\, which says that you should evaluate an act in terms of which outcomes would likely obtain\, were you to perform it. Counterfactual decision theory has traditionally been subsumed under causal decision theory as a particular formulation of the latter. This is a mistake. Counterfactual decision theory is importantly different from\, and superior to\, causal decision theory. Causation and counterfactuals come apart in three kinds of cases. In cases of overdetermination\, an act can cause a good outcome without the latter counterfactually depending on the former. In cases of constitution\, an act can constitute a good outcome rather than causing it. In cases of determinism\, either the laws or the past counterfactually depend on your act\, even though your act cannot cause the laws or the past to be different. In each of these cases\, it is counterfactual decision theory which gives the right verdict\, and for the right reasons. \nRoom: School V. \nJoin online via Teams.

SUMMARY:Metaphysics Seminar Bruno Jacinto (University of Lisbon)
DESCRIPTION:Title: NeoRussellian Logicism \nAbstract: \nThe Russellian route for establishing the logicality of mathematics consisted in showing that mathematical entities are nothing but properties of a topic-neutral kind\, and that mathematics is a part of higher-order logic. Owing in part to the absence of a result capable of sustaining a Russellian reduction of arithmetic to higher-order logic\, the Russellian route for  has been neglected. \nIn this talk I will sketch how the project of deriving arithmetic from higher-order logic can be carried out once modal resources are available. This result constitutes a first step in the project of defending a neoRussellian logicism according to which all mathematical entities consist of topic-neutral properties and mathematics is a part of higher-order modal logic. Finally\, I will consider how to carry out a reduction of set-theory to higher-order modal logic\, with sets themselves being identified with properties\, and make a case that such a reduction would be especially attractive.

DESCRIPTION:When Silence “Speaks”  \n  \nIn this paper I aim to give an account of the contribution silence can make  in a conversation\, focusing exclusively on the case of silence in the face of an observed assertion.  My aim is to establish that there are conditions under which silence can entitle audience members to treat the silent participant as having accepted the assertion.  I aim to do so by appeal to Grice’s Cooperative Principle\, together with the claim that silent rejection is uncooperative.  I distinguish my account from one on which silence conversationally implicates acceptance.  After doing so\, I offer an account of the defeasibility of the entitlement in question.  Given that the entitlement (to regard another’s silence as indicating acceptance) is generated by the CP\, this entitlement is defeated whenever either (i) there are grounds for thinking that the exchange is not cooperative or (ii) there are reasons for audience silence that are stronger than those generated by the CP.  I use this account of defeat to discuss a range of cases (catcalling; pedagogical contexts; power differentials; risks of speaking out; etc.) in which there would be no entitlement to take an audience’s silence as indicating their acceptance.

SUMMARY:Metaphysics Seminar Jiqi Liu (Peking University)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Truthmaking beyond truthmakers\, a solution for negative existentials \nAbstract: \nThe problem of negative truths is arguably the puzzle for truthmaking theory\, called the holy grail (Molnar 2000\, 85)\, and the dragon to be slain (Parsons 2006\, 591). I propose to solve a piece of the puzzle\, the truthmaking for negative existentials. My solution introduces the domain as a factor in truthmaking and satisfies the main desideratum of Molnar’s tetrad (2000). It offers a perimeter formed by the domain to constrain the truthmaking\, rather than accepting Necessitarianism that claims the truthmaker necessitates the truth. This solution is a start to piece the puzzle of negative truths\, the truthmaking for negative existentials goes beyond the truthmaker.

SUMMARY:Language & Mind Seminar: Andrew Peet (University of Leeds)
DESCRIPTION:Understanding Plausible Deniability:\n\n\nHow is it that a speaker S can at once make it obvious to an audience A that she intends to communicate some proposition p\, and yet at the same time retain plausible deniability with respect to this intention? The answer\, I suggest\, is that S can bring it about that A has a very high justified credence that ‘S intended p‘ without putting A in a position to know that `S intended p‘. In order to achieve this\, I argue\, the speaker has to exploit a sense in which communication can be lottery-like. Two objections to this proposal are considered: 1. It results in an unacceptable testimonial skepticism\, 2. it conflicts with the standard picture of understanding and communicative success. I argue that the resultant skepticism is limited and plausible. And I suggest that the standard picture of understanding and communicative success is wrong.

SUMMARY:Feminist Philosophy and Social Theory Seminar: Colin Troesken "Pornography\, Videogames\, and Ideology"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In her 2018 paper “Pornographic Videogames: A Feminist Examination\,” Mari Mikkola argues that pornographic videogames as a category are not problematic or worthy of condemnation from a feminist perspective.  Contra Mikkola \, I advance a view which says that pornographic videogames have category-specific features which make them especially disposed to reinforce bad sexual ideology.  I investigate the ways in which art-categories such as medium and genre ascribe value and meaning to contents within depictions.  I then show that both virtual media and pornography have unique expectations from audiences which partly constitute them both as categories.  In the case of pornographic videogames\, I argue that part of what constitutes the category is an expectation of harmful or misleading sexual imagery which the audience can have a prescribed interactive engagement with.  I go on to show why the interactive and immersive components of pornographic videogames aid in reinforcing harmful sexual ideology.  I conclude that pornographic videogames\, as a category\, are worthy of condemnation from a feminist perspective.

SUMMARY:Epistemology Seminar: Sharon Ryan (West Virginia) "The Epistemic State of Wisdom"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: What distinguishes wise people from the masses? The wise person has an impressive grasp on the issues that really matter in life. But what really matters? And what exactly is this impressive grasp? Is the impressive epistemic state of wisdom best categorized as a form of knowledge? If so\, then a wise person is someone who is knowledgeable on the things that really matter in life. I will very briefly make a few claims about the subject matter of wisdom. The remainder of the discussion will focus on the epistemic state of wisdom. \nI will offer for discussion\, several interesting arguments against the view that the epistemic state of wisdom is knowledge. I will argue that some of these arguments are successful\, and therefore it is not true that wise people are those who have knowledge about the things that really matter in life. I will wrap up this presentation arguing that the epistemic state of wisdom is a form of understanding that is not reducible to knowledge.

SUMMARY:Metaphysics Seminar Christopher Masterman (University of St. Andrews and University of Oslo)
DESCRIPTION:Title: One way the ways the world could have been can’t be \nAbstract: Suppose we are contingentists and accept two commonly endorsed modal principles about propositions: first\, that a proposition must exist to be true and\, second\, that a proposition expressed by a sentence featuring a term depends for its existence on the referent of that term. What do we then have to say about possible worlds\, i.e.\, the ways\, or representations of the ways\, the world could have been? Here\, I argue that the contingentist must plausibly accept that possible worlds are themselves contingent entities. I then develop a contingentist model theory to model this conception of possible worlds and outline a series of negative results. First\, I show that the contingentist cannot accept that propositions true in all worlds are metaphysically necessary. Second\, I show that if possibility is just truth at some possible world\, then this kind of contingentism collapses into necessitism. Finally\, I show that the contingentist can only accept even a weak connection between propositions\, worlds and possibility if they allow for distinctions between ways the world could be which\, by the contingentist’s own lights\, don’t make any sense.
