SUMMARY:Unity Seminar: WIP Session Alessandro Rossi
DESCRIPTION:Title: Possibilist Quantification and Generalised Kripke Semantics \nAbstract: The standard Kripke semantics for predicate modal logic allows for actualist and possibilist interpretations of quantifiers. On an actualist interpretation\, the range of quantifiers is supplied by the domain associated to the world of evaluation. On a possibilist interpretation\, serving as the range of quantifiers is the union of all world domains. On the face of it\, possibilist quantifiers seem to exhibit a higher expressive power since they do not carry any restriction. In particular\, possibilist quantifiers allow us to draw a distinction\, seemingly unavailable with actualist quantifiers\, between what could exist and what merely could exist. However\, Correia (2007) has shown that such difference in expressive power is cancelled when we move to a two-dimensional semantics\, for a language expanded with infinitely many pairs of a certain kind of “rigidity operators’’. The result is secured by a new truth-preserving translation manual initially adumbrated by Fine (1977) and later developed by Forbes (1989).  The extreme fragility of this project is evidenced. For\, there is another distinction to be drawn\, concerning what could not exist. It is argued that\, in a Kripke framework suitably generalised\, both actualists and possibilists can afford to take talk of what could not exist in a non-metaphorical manner. However\, unless the actualist is prepared to license quantification over what could not exist\, their quantifiers are strictly less expressive than possibilist ones. To reach the expressive power conferred to a modal language by possibilist quantifiers\, the actualist must start speaking like a possibilist after all.

SUMMARY:WIKI Seminar: Ethan Lai 'Knowledge Relative to Competence'
DESCRIPTION:A less discussed aspect of the problem of logical omniscience is that standard epistemic logic also leads to conceptual omniscience: you know all the conceptual consequences of what you know. A conceptual consequence of what you know is anything that follows from it by a necessary\, a priori\, non-logical link between concepts. For example\, if you know that a knot is a trefoil\, the logic has you knowing that it is chiral (i.e. it cannot be deformed into its mirror image). In general\, since a necessary truth holds at every possible world\, knowledge is closed under conceptual consequence\, not just logical consequence. No real agent knows all of these. This is the problem of conceptual omniscience.\n\nThis problem matters because much of what separates an expert from a novice is conceptual\, not logical. Standard epistemic logic erases this difference. Most responses to omniscience target its logical side: how logical competence limits closure. My aim is to model how conceptual competence limits closure. I do so by extending standard epistemic logic with impossible worlds. Since Hintikka (1975)\, impossible worlds have been used to block closure. But the move is cheap if the modeller adds them just to fit the verdicts the model should explain. To do better\, I show that facts about an agent’s conceptual competence fix which impossible worlds she can rule out\, and that these facts can be established independently of what she knows. I call the resulting model KRC\, for knowledge relative to competence.

SUMMARY:Metaphysics & Logic Seminar: Greg Restall - 'Will the Real Higher-Order Logic Please Stand Up?'
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In this work-in-progress talk\, I will attempt to clarify some of the issues surrounding second- and higher-order logics. How should we understand the relationship between the proof-theoretic inferentialist presentations of such logics and their model-theoretic truth conditional semantics? I will argue that in an important sense\, the so-called full semantics for second- and higher-order logics is too strong\, and that a wider class of models is not only necessary\, but is  mathematically and philosophically desirable.\n\nThe good news: such a class of models already exists and is well understood. (And no\, it’s not the Henkin semantics.)
