TITLE: On Qualitative Properties

ABSTRACT: In his Possible Worlds, Divers (2002:349) complains: “I know of no detailed discussion of the qualitative/non-qualitative distinction for properties”. This is surprising given the distinction is at the heart of many debates on Leibniz’s Identity of Indiscernibles and Haecceitism. In the literature, attempts to clarify the qualitative/non-qualitative divide have all been found wanting. To make matters worse, since the publishing of Possible Worlds, the use of the qualitative distinction has become more popular. We find it in Diekemper (2009, 2015), Eddon (2011), Locke (2012), Cowling (2015), Hoffmann-Kolls (2019), and Simmons (2020), just to name a few; and yet, we still lack a sound criterion to discern qualitative and non-qualitative properties. Here I attempt to fill this gap. Very roughly, the idea is to discern qualitative and non-qualitative properties based on invariance of formulas under permutation of constants.
