Conceptual Engineering Seminar | Sanford Goldberg (Northwestern/St Andrews): “Proposing non-standard concepts in epistemology: de novo construction or conceptual re-engineering?”

17th November 2020 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Event Navigation

Abstract. — Let ‘epistemic concepts’ refer to those concepts which express the standards employed in epistemic assessment.   Such concepts offer an interesting test case for conceptual engineering.  On the one hand, they seem like they are tailor-made to be constructed de novo, answering to whichever of the varying interests we might have in epistemic evaluation.  On the other, charges of “changing the subject” are not unknown in epistemic theorizing, suggesting that there is a fixed subject-matter we are trying to capture in our concepts and theories.  In this talk I try to motivate the need for some non-standard epistemic concepts, and then suggest how they might be seen as conceptually re-engineered rather than merely constructed de novo.
