Thesis/research: Eritreans in Italy: A Multi-Sited Ethnography of Migrant Welfare in Messina, Rome, and Milan

Supervisor

Dr Stavroula Pipyrou

Research Interests: Italy, the Italian Southern Question, migration, diaspora, Italian colonialism, wellbeing, identity construction, Islam and identity, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mediterranean mobility, Turkey

Doctoral Research:  My work focuses on the movement and corresponding changes in perspective of recent Eritrean migrants in Italy, focusing on their experiences of wellbeing as they move south to north. This multisited work will begin in Messina, moving to Rome and Milan to examine changes in experience of migrants as they follow this established migration route. I am particularly interested in impact of historical associations (regarding Italians with reference to the question of the Mezziogiorno and relative regional experiences of immigration/emigration, from the Eritrean perspective concerning interactions between recent migrants and the established Eritrean diaspora within Italy, and finally with reference to the colonial link between Italy and Eritrea).
