‌Warden: Mary Carr

Mary Carr

Welcome to John Burnet Hall! My name is Mary and I am the Warden at JBH. I come County Louth, on the east coast of Ireland and in my day job I work at ELT (English Language Teaching), helping international students at St Andrews to develop their language skills. In my role as Warden, I lead a great team of Assistant Wardens, Rikard, Sonja and Patrick and, together, we offer support and guidance to the residents of John Burnet Hall. Being a student at St Andrews is an amazing experience but it is not always easy. If you're experiencing homesickness, money worries, exam stress or any other hard-to-deal-with situation, please come and talk to us and we will do our very best to help you through the difficult days. We can often put you in touch with other services in the University and we can always offer a supportive, friendly, listening ear. One of us will be in the Front Hall office every evening between 7.00-7.30 and we all live in Hall and eat in the dining room so do feel free to approach us if you want to chat.

Both the Hall Committee and the Wardennial Team will organise social events throughout the year and we would encourage you to join in and also make suggestions for new kinds of events you might like to see in Hall. Here at John Burnet, we embrace the 'drunkenness of things being various' (not any old drunkenness, I hasten to add!) and we celebrate diversity so let us know if you'd like to have llamas to visit or poetry slams or papier-mâché moose-making events. It's your community, make it as original and wonderful as you are!

If you have an emergency or urgent issue, you can contact the duty Assistant Warden (weekdays 7pm-8am, and 2pm-8am on weekends), on extension 7027, or on 01334 467027 if dialling from an external line. You can also email jbawteam@st-andrews.ac.uk (Assistant Wardens) or jbhwarden@st-andrews.ac.uk (Warden).

Rickard Sept 2015

Rikard Jalkebro

Hi, I'm Rikard and I'm a teaching fellow in International Relations. I lecture on terrorism, political violence, organised crime, peace and conflict studies and corruption. I like Game of Thrones, buying basically everything on Amazon, baking Swedish delights, and being simultaneously fabulicious and fair.

Patrick McGlinchey Assistant Warden

Patrick McGlinchey

Hello, I’m Patrick, a Belfast native and an identical twin. I’m currently pursuing a doctorate in Divinity on the enigmatic Rowan Williams. I enjoy rock climbing and coffee-fuelled reading in equal measure, and I very much look forward to meeting you all.

Sonja Dobrowski Assistant Warden John Burnet

Sonja Dobroski

Hello! My name is Sonja. I am originally from the U.S. and am currently pursuing a PhD in Social Anthropology In my spare time you'll find me going on nature walks and practicing yoga. I love walking in Tentsmuir forest and going on hikes in the Highlands. I am a huge Lord of the Rings fan and often reference Gandalf when giving advice. I am looking forward to seeing you around hall!"
