Albany Park

St Mary Street, St Andrews, Fife, KY16 8BP

Capacity: 310-315

Category: Medium sized self-catered hall

Hall description

Just a 15 minute walk from town, Albany Park is directly situated next to the stunning Fife coastline with East Sands beach a stone’s throw away, allowing some rooms of the residence to have spectacular views of the sea and beach. There are 40 undergraduate flats, all of which are comprised of six bedrooms, and have a common room, a kitchen and bathroom facilities. The residence is entirely self-catered, and a single set of pots and pans is provided in each kitchen, although it’s advised that students bring or acquire their own upon arrival. The undergraduate community itself is a mix of first year and returning students. For postgraduate students, there are 12 four bedroom flats, 4 six bedroom flats and 12 two bedroom flats. Communal facilities within the hall include a common room with a TV, a second common room that is primarily used as an ‘event’ space that contains a Ping-Pong table, a computer room, two laundry rooms, a code-access bike shed and a vegetable garden where residents can take part in growing their own food.

Albany Park is the third largest hall in terms of number of residents, although this does not detract from the strong and unique community spirit that pervades the hall, which is due in no small part to the hard work of the democratically elected Student Committee. The Committee aims to foster community spirit by putting on two social events each week such as pub quizzes, film nights, pizza nights, house parties and bonfires on the beach, as well as the annual Albany Park Ball and the summer Fun Day and hog roast. The Albany Park Wardennial Team are a point of contact for anything concerned with welfare and guidance, and are always there to listen and help students with any difficulties they may encounter. The Wardennial Team also help the committee in building a sense of identity within the hall by putting on their own events during the year, such as BBQ’s, as well as having a number of activity groups that are open for residents to join, with past groups including a book club, a photography group, a running group and a football group. Albany is known for being a very sociable hall, with residents having more independence and personal responsibility than the more traditional halls.

Hall history

Initially opened in the 1970’s as an ‘affordable’ option for students, Albany Park has flourished through the hard work of the Hall Committee, Wardennial Team and Residential Services Manager.
