Connecting the Scope and Generator
The above photo shows how you should connect the signal generator and the ‘scope to most of your circuits. (The example shown is experiment 2, but the others are similar.) There are two points to note.
- Firstly, that you should use both input channels of your oscilloscope. One to observe the input signal, the other to observe the output. For this reason you can see two sets of croc clips connected to the input. One set brings the signal from the generator, the other allows the input to be observed on the ‘scope.
- Secondly, note that the red croc clips are for the ‘live’ connections and the ‘black’ ones are for the ‘earth’ (or zero volts) ones.
The Potentiometer
The photo above shows the inside of a typical potentiometer (or ‘pot’). This should help you understand how it works. Normally you connect the input between the ends of the circular track (i.e. to the leads at the ends). The output is then taken from the central connection, which is linked to a ‘wiper’ or ‘finger’ which can be moved along the track - altering the output - as you rotate the shaft of the pot.
