Welcome to the UK Regional Student Chapter of the Society for Marine Mammalogy. This newly formed chapter was established in the spring of 2006 and is designed to bring UK postgraduate students studying marine mammals together.
The number of students studying marine mammals in UK institutions has grown in recent years so the purpose of our chapter is to strengthen links between UK based marine mammal students, through exchange of ideas and research discussion. We have an annual postgraduate conference open to all UK postgraduate (Masters and PhD) students that enables our members to get together and discuss their projects. Our meetings include invited speakers and workshops (see schedule of last conference) and are a chance to meet and discuss ideas with students from across the UK.
This chapter is made up of and run by student members based across UK including; the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) at the University of St Andrews, the University of Aberdeen, The Lighthouse Field Station, the Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory, Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), Durham University, University of Plymouth, and Newcastle University.
Even though the emphasis of the UK Regional Student Chapter is postgraduate study, please contact us if you are an undergraduate completing an honours thesis on marine mammals, as we have a limited number of places for undergraduate attendees at our conference.
The chapter is evolving all the time as more members join, so please visit our website often to keep up with the news and meet new members. If you would like to become a member then please contact us, as we would love to hear from you.
