Students can construct a two-mirror resonator and see how this defines the gaussian mode. Real-time changes of the cavity length can be made, with the display also showing either the characteristics of the beam, or the position of the resonator on the stability diagram. Multi-element cavities can be built up, as shown above. Up to four lenses and two lens ducts can be included. Some resonators are provided as examples, with suggested explorations. Students can drag components around the screen, with the resultant new cavity mode being calculated in real time. This, and the ease of use of the simulation make this a particularly attractive teaching tool.
