Student Talks

There was the opportunity for around twenty students to give a 20-25 minute talk on any reseach topic of their choice. This gave an excellent opportunity for those students to present their work to their peers and for all participants to get a flavour of the research currently being carried out by fellow group theorists.

A preliminary timetable of the talks can be found here

Due to lack of interest we decided not to display any posters at the conference.

Plenary Speakers

The conference featured two talks by the following invited speakers:

Dr Class Röver (NUI, Galway).

Quasi Isometries of Groups.

"I will give a survey of this exciting area somewhere between group theory and geometry - whose goal is to understand how much of the algebraic structure of a finitely generated group is already determined by the geometry of its Cayley graph or complex."

Professor Martin Liebeck (Imperial College, London).

" If G is a finite group, a character ratio of G is an algebraic number of the form χ(g)/χ(1), where χ is an irreducible character of G and g is an element of G. Character ratios play a role in all sorts of applications, such as random walks on groups, world maps, triangle generation and representation varieties. I shall discuss some of these applications in the case where G is a simple group and also talk about how one can prove results about character ratios and indicate open problems in this area. "

The Conference Venue (Gateway).

The conference was held in the Gateway building. Below are some pictures of the seminar room we used.
