Steven Campbell was recognised as one of the most innovative and exciting
painters in Scotland. He was born in Glasgow. After leaving
school he worked in the steel industry as an engineer and fitter.
He trained at Glasgow School of Art between 1978 and 1982. In 1982
he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and travelled to New York.
In New York, Campbell gained an international reputation. He
returned to Glasgow in 1986 and developed his unique style of overlaying
narrative with riddles and puzzles. His figurative painting style
was reviewed by art critics as 'postmodern'.
Campbell's fascination with layered narratives and freely-associated
ideas can be seen in this work. The work was created in a style
that mimics a decaying poster and includes painted images, string constructions,
three-dimensional puppet figures, sketch books, receipts, song lyrics
and various artist's tools.
Tom Normand is a lecturer in Scottish art at the University of St Andrews. The
text appearing on the work refers to Dr Normand's interests, and puns
on the titles of his published work.
